That was the biggest worry all week leading up to the Parade, but Friday evening turned out perfectly for the over 1,500 folks we joined that night. Our gaggle of makers gathered early that evening for finishing touches on our rather complicated project and to practice “marching” while keeping our lanterns in the right order. Friday evening started with a welcome dinner for all the Maker Scholars and their guests. After we enjoyed the taco bar (so. much. salsa.), spending a little time getting to know each other, and having a quick Decatur Makers orientation, we began a brainstorming session to come up with a problem that would be the focus of the weekend. To help approximate the value of pi, our Buffon’s Needle experiment had young makers dropping pencils on a lined whiteboard lying on the floor. A pencil on a line was a hit, on the white space was a miss. After each drop, the kids entered the hit or miss on our Arduino-driven counter which kept track of the estimate given by?
