Earth Dragon: At long last: vermicast!

http://www.wildaboutworms.blogspot.com/2009/03/at-long-last-vermicast.html

Dedicated to the fine art of vermicomposting. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. At long last: vermicast! Harvested my first batch of vermicast yesterday afternoon. After spreading layers of newspapers to catch any moisture, I removed the heavy tiers one by one, laying them on the ground. Surprisingly, the contents of the second working tray almost looked ready to harvest as well: fine, dark, and moist, almost like a chocolate cake. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). At long last: vermicast!

Earth Dragon: Coming Into the Home Stretch

http://www.wildaboutworms.blogspot.com/2009/03/coming-into-home-stretch.html

Dedicated to the fine art of vermicomposting. Friday, March 6, 2009. Coming Into the Home Stretch. I'm thinking about holding a (vermi)cast party and getting interested volunteers from the Hogwarts Community to help harvest the goods. Regardless of whether the party logistics come to fruition, however, I'm relishing the prospect of symbolically gifting the first vermicast so it fertilizes many gardens: those at the one at the Center for Public Service, the homes of faculty and staff, and our school.

My preschooler's two sunflower seeds, whose potting soil was enriched with vermicast, have sprouted! Maybe I'm missing my calling.

Dedicated to the fine art of vermicomposting. Thursday, June 5, 2008. The Adventures of Herman, the Squirmin' Worm. The Adventures of Herman: The Autobiography of Squirmin' Herman the Worm". Some wild facts about worms: First: they're hermaphroditic! To some extent, worms can regenerate: if their posterior (tail) end is severed, they can grow a new tail, but the same cannot be said if their anterior (head) is lopped off. Wednesday, June 4, 2008. Dedicated to the fine art of vermicomposting. Wednesday, February 20, 2008. Vermicast, here we come! Glenn Martinez, getting cosy with a Perionyx excavatus! This semester, Hogwarts Academy generously provided me with a Wodehouse Sustainability grant to research vermicomposting: the act of using worms to break down organic wastes into rich vermicast, a nutrient-rich medium suitable for fertilizing one's garden. In other words, worm poop! So what's the big deal about Perionyx excavatus? Plenty. On the ...

Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Yan Lianke (trans. Cindy Carter), Dream of Ding Village. Yan Lianke's harrowing, often macabre novel, based on a true incident, is a searing indictment of personal and governmental corruption and materialism. Attempting to alleviate poverty, the villagers of Ding Village, in rural Henan Province, China, begin selling their blood plasma, creating a rampant HIV epidemic. A tragic chain of events ensues, dissolving the bonds of family and community life. Blogs, Wikis, and Nings.

He does a particularly masterful job skewering linguistic deterioration: adolescents utilize a superficial, minimalist, neo-California style sociolect, chock full of fillers, profanity, and hedges, and devoid of any lexical richness or edge, e.g. "Unit! Wild About Woods | Conserving Britain's Woodlands

Conserving Britain's Woodlands. August 27, 2016. British Woods are a dying breed, slowly being encroached upon by the onward march of population growth and the subsequent demand for houses. Its not apparent to many of the population but there is plenty of places to live – amongst the trees. It was not so long ago, that thousands of communities did just this. We could erect elaborate tree houses, utilising the woods rather than brutally pillaging them. These strange American accents were thrown into Briti...

Wild About Writing | Ray Argyle's Words on Books, Issues and Opinions — and the Ideas Behind Them

Ray Argyle's Words on Books, Issues and Opinions — and the Ideas Behind Them. The Boy in the Picture. Remembering the Liberation of Paris. August 26, 2014. When Paris fell to the Germans on June 10, 1940, it truly seemed as if, in the words of an earlier British foreign minister, the lights had gone out all over Europe. In Paris, a Comm...
