http://stephenrutt.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-north-ron-diaries-24th-29th-may.html

Friday, 10 July 2015. The North Ron diaries: 24th - 29th May. We'll be on our way.'. I run upstairs, find the girls and tell them. I find George and shout at him and he groans like its the worst news he's ever received yet still manages to stagger out in two minutes to the car, lacking socks and other essential items of clothing. A Killer Whale twitch is an essential hangover cure. The presence of beasts sharpens the mind better than bacon or eggs. The Land Rover shakes us awake. It was a sunny day. ...

Stephen Rutt: Nature, Culture, Photography.: October 2014

http://stephenrutt.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 15 October 2014. Winter isn't a season worth celebrating in London: it is damp, mild and filthy, and its citizens match the gloominess of their surroundings. It is mild enough so that the Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps don't have to leave, and this doesn't give spring a headstart but spoils it's grand arrival with the longer, brighter days. If the leaves never quite all fall from the trees than what is winter? Where does that leave spring? S different to what I ’. M used to in the country. Notes fr...

Tuesday, 2 September 2014. Funny how your ideas of nature can seem so solid and yet change so quickly. I got a text just as I was leaving work. A Wryneck at Wormwood Scrubs, the second ever record for the park. It hastened my step. Nevermind. It’s the promise that nature can surprise us still — can turn up where least expected and in the least promising of places — that sustains. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Thursday, 23 April 2015. The North Ron Diaries: 12th April - 19th April. Since I arrived on the island:. My phone has broken. Two pairs of trousers have broken. My camera is malfunctioning. My laptop has picked up an irritating quirk. My two-week blisters healed. It has rained a lot, hailed a little less and snowed twice. I saw two Swallows flying over an eagle. I have seen a hawk in the hand and the panic they cause in the air. I have seen Gannets spear into rough waves. I fell on my face at a ceilidh.

Sunday, 29 March 2015. The North Ron Diaries: 22nd - 27th of March. I don't know how the Romantics did it. Visionary dreariness? I'm getting cabin fever, looking at the weather and putting off today's census. Dreary rain and dreary southwesterly winds. Visibility? Poor I catch up on reading instead and watch Fulmars through the window being buffeted about. The fever sinks into my bones. I could turn back but I persevere. I slog and slip and slide my way around and find nothing whatsoever. Halfway down th...

Stephen Rutt: Nature, Culture, Photography.: January 2015

http://stephenrutt.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Monday, 26 January 2015. I want to melt away at that precise moment. It is an urge that comes over me, when looking for owls; when every cracking twig, or kicked pebble seems amplified, exaggerated to comic levels of clumsiness. I want to disappear in bushes and watch the owl unobserved. Instead it converts its disdainful glare into flight at one sudden, inelegant and human movement. This is the unofficial countryside. Thursday, 1 January 2015. The sun turned golden and lit up the reeds. Meanwhile an adu...

Tuesday, 26 May 2015. The North Ron Diaries: 13th May. The numbers being seen here are not quite like they are from North Uist, where watchers from Aird an Runair have logged several thousand instead of hundreds this spring, prolonged over weeks instead of days. However it appears that skua passage is more widespread in the remoter coastal parts of north west Scotland than previously thought, it just takes several hours sat on a rain-lashed rock to find out. There is a postscript. View my complete profile.

Wild writers in the east of England. February 26, 2014. Wivenhoe Park in the Snow. As cavity nesters, jackdaws compete for the few sites available; the bright eyes may have evolved to act as a warning signal. Jackdaws are remarkably faithful to their nest site, staying close even through the winter months. Here in Wivenhoe Park, the jackdaws join a noisy roost on the nearby library building, not far, as the crow flies, from their nests in the old parkland trees. February 12, 2014.
