At the Foot of the Stairs: April 2011
http://footofstairs.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
At the Foot of the Stairs. Friday, April 29, 2011. Things started to fall apart during my last week in Utah. By things, I mean me. We had some very very good news: My father continues to do amazingly well. It became clear during my last week in Utah that my father will continue to thrive, but that also meant that things had to change. So, we set in motion the grinding work of moving both of my parents to Missouri. A few things make this harder and easier:. I have to miss Dereck's birth, which sucks.

At the Foot of the Stairs: January 2012
http://footofstairs.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
At the Foot of the Stairs. Monday, January 16, 2012. It would have been nice to get away for the weekend, even a working weekend. But it is even nicer to have this pressure off my plate. Chris just gave me a look that said, "REALLY? Like he has seen it coming for awhile, and that's probably the case. It bubbles up, I cry it out a little, get on with my day. And so it goes. Well, I didn't get a vacation, but I did get a peaceful, beautiful, sunny afternoon. I'll take it. Saturday, January 14, 2012. She al...

Begin typing your search above and press return to search. Press Esc to cancel. November 10, 2015. Know is the way these creatures take in air and get their oxygen is nothing short of astonishing. So that’s our topic: mysterious breathers. We’re going to start with the familiar with you. Take a look at this pulsing how-we-breathe diagram. Created by the wonderful illustrator Eleanor Lutz. But what if you’re a bird? Birds, (we didn’t know this), do it differently. Or ears or anus. Insects (which means the...

At the Foot of the Stairs: Off to a great start
http://footofstairs.blogspot.com/2015/01/off-to-great-start.html
At the Foot of the Stairs. Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Off to a great start. So, anyway. Back. Still here. But I'm not even sure why I started writing this, because I'm so bored. I don't feel like I'm depressed, but I could be wrong. I do these little checklists: When was the last time you had fun/felt happy? Yesterday) Can you have fun/feel happy? Yes) Are you sleeping too much because you feel like hiding? Sometimes, but not this week) Is there anything you're interested in/looking forward to? Even skyd...

A Blog For the Rational Public. The Real Truth About GMOs and Other Stuff. What Do I Do? Why Do I Care? Why Do I Care? I thought. Cool! So I got to thinking OK, I’ve used Roundup before on weeds in my yard. Guilty as charged (though I have not used it in over a year and would not consider spraying my tomato plants with it). Now let’s consider just a tiny portion of what is on the label of Roundup:. Not only is Roundup. The plant, it is also. Produced by the one of the strongest voices against GMO in our ...

At the Foot of the Stairs: November 2014
http://footofstairs.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
At the Foot of the Stairs. Tuesday, November 4, 2014. The universe is continually devising innovative and unexpected ways of humiliating me. Last week, it hit my car with a bus while I was in it (school bus; grazed me) and knocked off my license plate and scratched the hell out of my bumper, but the car is drivable. And I need to call my insurance team and schedule an appointment for repairs. It's just one more thing. I said, "Can you please come tell my students that? My eyebrows nearly shot off my head...

Terrastro » Automatic timer for Sony NEX-5

The Milky Way and all things astronomical. Automatic timer for Sony NEX-5. July 23rd, 2011. I quite like my little Sony NEX-5. It has a great imaging sensor in a very compact body. Because it is so light I used it with my telescope for astro-photography and was getting good results. However, the frustrating thing about Sony NEX series is that it does not have a built in automatic timer (intervalometer) and it was not much fun pressing the button on the infra-red remote every 15 seconds. This is pretty st...
