wildtowild: From Ontario..........

http://wildtowild.blogspot.com/2011/04/from-ontario.html

Sunday, April 17, 2011. Ellie Maxwell, entomologist at Dow Gardens in Midland, found this Red-tailed Hawk down in a gulley and unable to fly. She (the hawk) was sore and bruised and did not respond to treatment for many days. After a long stay in our outdoor cages, her health began to improve. Note the USFWS band on her left leg. This allowed us to trace her origin to a nest in Ontario. She hatched from an egg in 2009, and was banded by Mr. Claude Radley. Joe hands her to Ellie for the release.

Sunday, January 9, 2011. Dodger, a red-tailed hawk who was found on the side of the road, was released by his finder, Mark Ciaravino. When Mark first saw the hawk, he was on his motorcycle, and did not have the means to transport him. He went home, brought back another vehicle, and scooped up the hawk in a towel. Soar on, Dodger. wildtowild: September 2010

http://wildtowild.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 25, 2010. They do best when housed with others of their own species. Learning to hunt crickets, moths, and other small prey species is critical to their survival. This stage takes place in a large flight cage where they also build up flight muscles in preperation for release. Look closely; a second owl is hiding just above the platform. Sunday, September 19, 2010. Here, she has her head tucked under her wing and is sleeping. She still has a few down feathers, and is ready to fledge.

Little Swamp Sanctuary: On Christmas Day...

http://littleswampsanctuary.blogspot.com/2010/12/on-christmas-day.html

Monday, December 27, 2010. On Christmas Day, an eagle flew over the swamp. Another eagle perched on the edge of the swamp. Note how the white head and white tail blend in with the background making it appear as if it is a smaller hawk, such as a red-tailed hawk, at first glance. Eagles are returning to their nesting territories now through late winter. Often eagle courtship both in the air and on the ground is mis-identified as fighting. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Little Swamp Sanctuary: July 2012

http://littleswampsanctuary.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 23, 2012. A little wren made her nest in the well house nest box this year. She did a great job of raising her little ones. Then she moved to a nest box not far away. The second nest box is just outside of Rusty's pen. Once that brood was out of the box and own their own, she went back to this second box and scolded us from the top. I got the message that she wanted us to clean out the box, but I didn't act on it right away. So. Until it was full to the top. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Thursday, August 26, 2010. The pellet was surgically removed by Dr. White, and the hawk is healing well in one of our large outdoor cages. We expect to release her this fall.
