Friday, September 24, 2010. Ascension Island 7 Wideawake terns. Photos uploaded Sept 24th but blog posted Oct 9th. As you approach the fairs there are thousands of birds flying around you and swooping down over your head. They are incredibly graceful and beautiful. They lay a single egg just in a small scrape on the ground or even on a rock. The chicks are dark and mottled and incredibly camouflaged against the lava, so that it is hard to spot them. Monday, October 12, 2009. Well, we did get to fly out and reached Ascension Island about 2.30am. Will blog about our 4 days there another time. Then on to UK and spent 4 weeks visiting family, shopping, tackling Hannah's garden, travelling alot and relaxing a little. Monday, March 22, 2010. Kidney Island and Cobb's wrens. The island has rocky shores and is covered in dense tussac grass. We were taken ashore from the launch in an inflatable dinghy and there were 4 sea lions playing in the water near the beach. In the middle of the island we passed a sea lion amongst the tussac. Thursday, February 18, 2010. We have now visited Cape Dolphin 3 times. Our first visit was with John just over a year ago when I took these photos. Cape Dolphin is on the north west of East Falkland, about 2 hours drive on road from here and then about an hour off road. The most fascinating thing to see there are the large breeding colonies of southern sea lions. We visited again last weekend with Hannah and Simon. Wednesday, March 16, 2011. Last weekend we stayed at Walker Creek settlement and on Sunday drove to a sandy beach called Seal Cove. From there Simon and I walked along the rocky coast and were surprised and delighted to find this young leopard seal resting on the rocks. These are the rarest seals here and this is the first one we have seen - I had almost given up hope of seeing one. It had probably swum up from Antarctica or South Georgia and was exhausted hence we were able to get quite close to it.
