With his wife, Mary, he produced a line of talented and fascinating men and women. William was the son of a Wax and Tallow Chandler who had come to London in the late 18th century from rural Oxfordshire where his family had been fellmongers. William admired JWM Turner and John Ruskin among others of his contemporaries.
