This morning we toured Harpers Ferry, and learned that in addition to its role in the Civil War, it was a key provisioning town for Meriwether Lewis before he set out on his expedition. Because of the delays we missed our second breakfast and dove right into lunch at the Chuck Wagon restaurant and bakery, so Bill had a second dessert instead. Hopefully we can explore the Civil War battlefield and related sites and museums there and in Harpers Ferry without being too hampered by rain. Beyond that our plans are still up in the air. We will take the train from Zurich through Andermatt to the next town, Oberalppass. Once we get into the Netherlands, we will leave the river and aim for Amsterdam (above the T in NETHERLANDS). Our goal is to ride 60-70 km a day, taking advantage of the train that also follows the river to get through high density industrial areas.

The cool night air (okay, I was freezing after I got out of bed) brought up a beautiful mist on the river. We spent the night moored just before this bridge. We learned a few ways to improve our efficiency in traversing locks, making the day more relaxing. This house can be rented for the month of September.
