Redfield sight came in today, and installed without a hitch. Instructions in the "Gunsmithing" section. No wood needed to be removed, and the sight didn't need to be reshaped. I also bought some 6-48 receiver plug screws from castbullet.com. I'll be filling in the rear sight dovetail with a filed-down Buffalo nickel ($1 on ebay.

Robert Rule has written a great book on the pre-64 Winchester 70, the offspring of the M54. Available on Amazon for way to much. It has a nice chapter on the M54, which isn't available here. Chuck Hawks has a nice write-up here. He also mentions the M54 in his article on the M70. American Rifleman has a short article. On the M54 leading into an article about the M70.

Eccentricities About My Model 54. Information Im Looking For. A parts catalogue can be found here. Differences between the Lyman 48W/WJS and Redfield TR-W. The TR-W is designed so that material doesn't need to be removed from the stock in order to install the sight. This is the same for the later 48WJS sights, but for the early 48WJS (I'll find the year later), wood needs to be removed. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
