The History of Windovers. A challenge for coach makers. Initially, the traditional coach makers saw the motor car as a threat to their livelihood. In fact, because the early cars had separate chassis and bodies this allowed them to offer bespoke bodies to suit the needs of individual buyers. Earnest Windover was born in 1861 and went on to design the Ralli Car, a two wheeled horse drawn vehicle, which became very popular. It was important for the new automobilists to be properly turned out.

The History of Windovers. Ater the second world war the demand for custom built car bodies declined. Windovers responded by making bodies for passenger coaches. These coaches were renowned for their comfort and luxury. They were some of the first models to be used for coach tours abroad. Windovers built many fire engines in the 1950s including 150 examples of the famous Green Goddess which were in use for over 50 years. R E T Windover. On his retirement in 1956, the company was closed down.

The History of Windovers. In 1796 Richard Windover moved his family and business to Grantham and expanded into the manufacture of coaches. In 1857 the business moved again, to Huntingdon, to be nearer to London and the main lines of communication. The manufacture of a coach wheel required an amazing degree of skill and precision.
