Writing where the sliver of light comes in. Skip to primary content. Writing Is an Act of Faith. April 14, 2015. Writing is an act of faith. You don’t know where it is going when you start. Funny thing happened at step two. Many of them had chosen books about controversial subjects that interested them, thinking at the outset they agreed with the author. By the end of the reading, they were fully convinced. Then they started reading other research and frustration set in: I thought I agreed wi...What I kn...

Joy, Spirit, and Christmas Karaoke | Wiser Today and Still Learning

https://wisertodayandstilllearning.wordpress.com/2014/12/12/joy-spirit-and-christmas-karaoke

Wiser Today and Still Learning. Joy, Spirit, and Christmas Karaoke. Listening to the students sing Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and watching them dance with each other dressed in their “tacky Christmas” sweaters, I am struck by the amount of joy and school spirit amongst the student body, and I wonder how it came to be this way. This is not the way every school operates, but it is the way schools. Operate, I think. How did this school get this way? December 12, 2014 at 6:26 pm. You ar...

Wiser Today and Still Learning. Falling Through the Looking Glass: A Tale of 4 Cheaters. As you’ve surely guessed by now, that little girl was I. And that incident was the first of 3 times I’ve cheated at schoolwork in my 20 years as a student. The second time I cheated was in 8. No Did he ferret out my deception and give me a zero as my 8. Grade English teacher did? No No, this time I got away with it. Students to cheat, and I certainly don’t believe all students. There’s a fifth kind of cheater. Th...

Wiser Today and Still Learning. Passion: Not for Rookies. It’s the time of year when nearly all the seniors have either already chosen the college or university they will attend or will be making their final decision soon. About two weeks ago, one senior sat in my office chatting. Slowly, it emerged that she was a little worried. Did she make the right choice? She doesn’t know exactly what she wants to study, and she is feeling uncertain about whether she chose the right university. February 27, 2014.

Wiser Today and Still Learning. Convince Me, Please. So here it goes. My reasons for not assigning daily homework to my junior history students. I can’t really tell if the student’s work is his or her own when they don’t do it in class. Did they copy someone else? Did they get too much help from a parent? And if they did, what purpose does the homework serve? It hasn’t helped them, and it hasn’t served me as a formative assessment that will help me help the students. So what say you? October 9, 2015.

Wiser Today and Still Learning. College Preparatory Is Not the Equivalent of College. It’s been awhile, I know. I feel like after such a lengthy absence I should have something really earth-shattering and mind-blowing to say, but all I have is this: students in a college preparatory school are not in college. Obvious, right? Perhaps not so much. No, college professors don’t teach that. The basics of good writing? October 13, 2016. Teaching American History Amidst the 2016 Presidential Election. Wiser Today and Still Learning. Here’s What I Would Have Said. Unfortunately, as so many of you know or have gathered by now, I am not comfortable standing up and speaking to large groups of people. Strange, right? Self-conscious.) Standing up in front of 100 colleagues and speaking, however, just isn’t going to happen no matter how much I care about you.🙂 I am much better in writing, so the following is what I. Wiser Today and Still Learning. Over the last two weekends, I’ve been designing the first of my AP U.S. unit plans for. If you are an AP U.S. history teacher, here’s a few things I’ve learned over the last few weeks. Perhaps this will help dispel some of the fear or frustration about the coming changes. Of course, as you design next year’s course for yourself, you may end up disagreeing with me. Fear not, my history-loving friends. Students. I hope this post was useful. Wiser Today and Still Learning. Practicing What I Preach Is Really, Really Hard. Sometimes by airing our grievances, even when nothing seems to change as a result,. Change. We are able to make adjustments ourselves that make for better results in the future. It is in that spirit that I am writing today. So here are my main criticisms with the new test and its rollout in no particular order. The rollout was flawed. Changes to the test were made. The year, forcing teachers and students to adjust on the fly.

Window Into Wakefield

Monday, October 24, 2011. At Wakefield we are not too cool for school! This past Tuesday evening I had the chance to take part in the faculty volleyball game that was a part of the Dig Pink event being held at another local school. It has become an annual tradition for our two schools to come together to play volleyball and raise money for breast cancer research. Every year following the girls’ varsity game, the faculties from our schools take to the court to test our prowess at the net. You might be thi...
