Window to Whimsy

Saturday, June 20, 2015. I might have been eight when the foundation was poured for the property that became the gray house on the perfect-for-pencil-rolls hill. One of my early memories is of "camping out" in sleeping bags on the would-be dining room's subfloor when the house was still raw and open to her bones. That first night she was hard to the touch and smelled of dust. She felt like a mystery: able to splinter or become something else. Friday, January 16, 2015. We did. We're only seven months ...

Window to Whimsy: And Then There Were Four: Or, Barnum & Bailey, Family-Style

http://www.windowtowhimsy.blogspot.com/2015/01/and-then-there-were-four-or-barnum.html

Friday, January 16, 2015. And Then There Were Four: Or, Barnum and Bailey, Family-Style. I am a researcher by nature. I make decisions slowly (or not at all). I like to have all the facts before I act. So, when I began contemplating a fourth baby, I went to the experts. I asked my mother-of-four-still-small-children friends what to expect. "What is it like? Their answers were all similar. It's crazy. You should totally do it. 1 Everyone becomes an expert on (or worrier about) logistics. 2 Suddenly, every...

Window to Whimsy: November 2012

Sunday, November 25, 2012. She's a teense on stilts. Her legs parade around as a 5T, but her waist is holding steady at a 2. You might say, she's only growing up. But, in spite of what her waist might lead you to believe, part of her is ever-expanding. This one has a brain that just won't quit. Her creativity: it's stretching. Her stories may not be long. They may not follow a pattern. They might not make much sense. But, they are always, always entertaining. A short sampling:. Can we have a movie night?

Window to Whimsy: June 2013

http://www.windowtowhimsy.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 24, 2013. Nathan went through a phase in which he made requests by referring to his body. For weeks, I was awaken by requests like, "Mom, my body wants celery and jelly." Nathan's body had a penchant to the peculiar in the early morning hours. (I gave him celery and peanut butter that morning. Just in case you're wondering.). One evening, I overheard him inform Jason, "My body wants apples, but Mommy's body forgot to buy apples." (Mama's body is very unreliable.). Where is the bag now? But h...

Window to Whimsy: February 2014

Friday, February 28, 2014. Last night, I found my little artist asleep in his bed with the etch 'n sketch on top of him. I moved the etch 'n sketch to his desk. This morning, I overheard him telling his brother about his latest drawing. "This is a picture of Daddy as a kid. See, he has hair." (He apparently also resembled Johnny Depp characters from the 80's as a child.). Mom is getting a baby! Each snowy winter, the kids get out and make snowmen. Families of snowmen. This year was no exception&#...That'...

Blooming Where Planted: November 2014

http://www.cathy.willman.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 30, 2014. I got Plenty to Be Thankful For! You know that song from Holiday Inn? Bing Crosby is singing, I got plenty to be Thankful For, as he's staring at a Thanksgiving turkey? Well, it's one of my favorites. I try to watch Holiday Inn every Thanksgiving.or at least soon thereafter. Haven't made it this year, yet. Prompted by the song, and by the month of November ending, I just wanted to jot down some of the things I've been especially Thankful for this month. Why had I never bought i...

Blooming Where Planted: A Trip to the Zoo

http://www.cathy.willman.com/2015/03/a-trip-to-zoo.html

Saturday, March 14, 2015. A Trip to the Zoo. That makes it fun. It was not coat weather. I still had jackets on the kids, it was foggy when we arrived, but it was supposed to shape up later, and it really did! The kids loved standing by the aquariums and watching all the fishies go by. Piper didn't last long, but Jacob could have stayed in that room for a while. Still, whenever Pipes would move, Jake would faithfully follow. They were so adorable looking at the fishies together. Though technically, orang...

Blooming Where Planted: The Jumping Deer Museum

http://www.cathy.willman.com/2015/03/the-jumping-deer-museum.html

Wednesday, March 18, 2015. The Jumping Deer Museum. The weather is getting nicer. And I need to get practicing getting out with the stroller. As we'd been driving by the Zoo last week, Piper had asked to stop at the Jumping Deer. It took me a minute to realize what she was talking about. she wanted to go to the Eiteljorg. Ah, we often call it the Cowboys and Indians Museum, because that's what Chris and Sam called it. But the Jumping Deer Museum is fairly appropriate too. They immediately started playing...

DewingJones: July 2013

http://dewingjones.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 20, 2013. Just Another Hole in the Wall. Part of the sunroom remodel involves relocating HVAC ducts and vents. This change will help with the future basement re-remodel so we can install a door between the basement living and storage area. At the far end of the basement you can see where the HVAC duct is currently at. It wraps through a doorway. Here is the hole that Greg and his dad labored through Friday afternoon. Nothing quite like making a hole a poured concrete wall. This was day one...

Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Hall Bath Renovation: Day? Contractors have been here Monday and Tuesday and made some great progress. So exciting to see it looking like a bathroom. New toilet in new location. Quinn loves the lid as it slowly lowers to not pinch fingers. Maybe it will get him interested in using a toilet. A gal can dream. Installed shower head and faucet. Close up of backsplash tile. Mirror lights up with a wave of your hand. Trim around the door. Needs some paint. Getting closer to completion.
