All the wonderful things we use for texture including in the foreground some Tiki mats. I confisgated these mats which were decorations at my nephews wedding.an outside affair with a Tiki theme. He said "Aunt Judy, what do you possibly want with these mats".Seriously? Denny was using lots of circles and disperse dyes which she was printing on paper. As mention...

Wednesday, July 29, 2015. What's Pink, Purple and Sparkly all Over? I've been busy doing non-quilting type projects but working with fabric none the less. My. Granddaughter turned 3 yesterday and her celebration is this weekend. I've been making some things for her.one of which is a princess dress. She loves pink and purple and of course sparkles .The fabric is the slippery, hard to work with kind of fabric I don't enjoy, but colors she loves. So here is the net, the sparkly and faux satin. Here is my pi...

Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Fresh Indigo and PTA. Our PTA group met at the Folk Art Center this month to play with fresh Indigo. Connie Brown put this all together, brought a ton of supplies along with her expertise in using this plant. It was wonderful fun and I learned so much. Connie brought several pots to show us the Indigo plant. And then it was time to get to work. We tried 3 different methods of working with fresh Indigo.first was to strip the leaves off the stalks. We then washed our fabric with bar...

.: Mounting Quilts on Canvas
http://judysimmonsfiberart.blogspot.com/2014/02/mounting-quilts-on-canvas.html
Friday, February 14, 2014. Mounting Quilts on Canvas. I have always liked seeing different ways to finish and display a quilt - there are many choices besides the traditional method. The museum wrap is one of my favorites but you need quite a bit of extra fabric to wrap around the 1 1/4" edge to the back. I often forget to leave the extra which leads me to mounting pieces on prestretched (and standard sized) canvas. This method works well with small quilts. I'm part of an online gallery - Galleribba.

Monday, March 29, 2010. Making/Carving your own stamps. Our Fiber Junkies group met last week to learn how to make/carve our own stamps, taught by our member Carol Sloan. It's great fun and very relaxing. There are many things you can use to carve stamps - one is called Easy Cut and it IS easy to cut. The downside is that it crumbles easily. I did this stamp (on right) years ago and the corner's have broken off, so don't know if I would use this material again. You can also use rubber gaskit material fro...

http://judysimmonsfiberart.blogspot.com/2015/08/nutmeg-forest.html
Friday, August 7, 2015. Well, what to do with all my deconstructive screen printed fabric.so interesting but so busy. It's hard to use pieces together. I've had this nutmeg colored fabric (created with "nutmeg" mx dye) and bronze which work well together. I often struggle with this part but after fiddling around for a while, I did put this combination together. And the finished piece - "Nutmeg Forest". Still have a pile more of this fabric but I'm making a dent! I am linked to Off the Wall Friday. Hi Sha...

http://judysimmonsfiberart.blogspot.com/2015/07/jills-quilt.html
Wednesday, July 8, 2015. A couple of years ago or less, my daughter Jill bought this quilt kit because of the finished piece on display in a quilt shop. It was a great piece but I thought to myself.my daughter doesn't even own a needle and thread so hmmmm.wonder how this is going to go together. Well before the pillows wore out, I thought I needed to finish this piece. I did an overall quilt/stipple type pattern which was fine as the fabric patterns were busy. I am linked to Off the Wall Fridays. Agreed ...

Monday, June 29, 2015. Eco Printing - Day 1. Last week, myself and 2 girlfriends headed off to Folly Beach to have several days of playing with Eco printing. Mary had sent us many articles and blogs to read in order to get a handle on this process but all had such different information. I had done a lot of natural dyeing years ago and had a little awareness about mordants etc.but this was a whole new world. And filled them with all sorts of natural fiber fabrics. This is flowers and some small palms.

.: Silk Fusion
http://judysimmonsfiberart.blogspot.com/2009/10/silk-fusion-and-angelina.html
Wednesday, October 7, 2009. The Fiber Arts Alliance group in Asheville, NC had a very inspiring meeting this month. Deb Brown did the program demonstrating how to make something called silk fusion. Being a lover of silk, this really caught my eye. Deb started with silk rovings; a roving is a cleaned strand of fiber from which threads and yarns are made. They take color beautifully as you can see in the picture below. Place the rovings so that are around 1" high. It seems way high but wait and see. Labels...
