A Square with Flair: April 2011

Friday, April 22, 2011. I shouldn't bake a midnight. Treat recipe bake times with skepticism. I used the last of my peanut butter, milk, and eggs for these? Wednesday, April 20, 2011. BYU does not schedule a spring break into its academic year, but many students schedule one in anyway. I joined these individuals last month and flew home for Mom's birthday. Linda J picked me up from the airport since Mom was at work and dropped off at home with the the beautiful birthday cake she made for Mom. I wrapped u...

Saturday, June 9, 2012. I will be married one week from now. We met exactly one year before our wedding, and here's how:. Johnny Zarbock: Avid skier, adventurer, Disneyworld vacationer. Emily Wood: Pie baker, vintage clothes wearer, staycationer. How did these two single and attractive, yet different individuals come together? Emily drove from her family’s home in Denver the morning of the 16. Emily Wood and Johnny Zarbock spent the rest of the recruiting weekend interviewing, teambuilding, and professio...

A Square with Flair: May 2011

Tuesday, May 31, 2011. One of my fellow employees recycles her old magazines by leaving them in the break room for break-takers to enjoy. A few weeks ago, I found four whole issues of Cat Fancy. The "World's Most Widely Read Cat Magazine." (I doubt that title has much competition.) Not wanting to be greedy, I took three issues, but went back for the fourth a couple days later. Check out these treasures! Fascinating Cat Fact #15: "Kittens in the womb acquire whiskers before body hair.". Issues has inspire...

If the shoe fits, buy it in every color: March 2011
http://buyitineverycolor.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 28, 2011. One year ago today. March 28, 2010 was the last time I had a coherent conversation with my mother. I was with my sister Susan in Pennsylvania; I had arrived the day prior (a Saturday) to celebrate Susan's birthday with her. We called Mom after church on Sunday, the 28 th. The next morning my mother suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage. In thinking about how I want to remember or mark the anniversary of her death, I remember that Mom always thought that spending ponderous time at...

If the shoe fits, buy it in every color: just when you thought I'd forgotten about Blogger
http://buyitineverycolor.blogspot.com/2011/08/just-when-you-thought-id-forgotten.html
Friday, August 26, 2011. Just when you thought I'd forgotten about Blogger. Never mind that it has been three months since my last post. Never mind that I don't even know where to start to "catch up" so I don't think I'll even try. Never mind that this summer passed in a blur more quickly than any other in recent memory. Never mind that I should be folding laundry right now. Just never mind a lot of things. Here are a few random highlights from the past three months, in no particular order. Mark gave us ...

Saturday, January 15, 2011. The holidays: illustrated and annotated CliffNotes edition. Felt gratitude to celebrate Thanksgiving with close friends and niece Claire, since family was more sparse than usual. Contrary to premonition of “lame” Thanksgiving, it was not. Tortured myself perusing “Handmade Holiday” blogs (see Narrating Life: Here We Go. And Call Me Badger. Started new part-time job for the City of Wheat Ridge. And I'll talk to you later, Miranda). Very glad to have Emily and John home as nursi...

Tuesday, April 9, 2013. Five years at BYU. Two different student apartments. Nine and one half months of wedded happiness. Fifty dollars spent on graduation robe rental (extortion). Four weeks left in midway. Two soon-to-be missionary siblings. One year of law school spouse-hood down (almost! One chambray shirt purchased (finally). Two knitting projects on the sticks. Zero midterms left, ever! One punch left to fill my fountain drink refill card. Eight weeks without mr. z this summer. Ew ew ew ew.

A Square with Flair: education gap
http://emtothemax.blogspot.com/2012/10/education-gap.html
Monday, October 22, 2012. Two incidents in my accounting ethics class today reaffirmed to me that some accounting students are missing some crucial aspects of academic understanding. Professor: "What did Machiavelli write? Student: "The Little Prince". Professor: Talking about Ayn Rand and her philosophical views. Another student: "Didn't she write The Scarlet Letter. I suggest the addition of a couple of extra literature courses to the accounting curriculum. October 22, 2012 at 1:23 PM. Ew ew ew ew.
