Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha. Dispatches from the Rucksack Revolution. Tuesday, December 12, 2006. Once I had some idea of where I was it and sobered up a bit, I rejoined the group. Or maybe the group rejoined me. Whatever happened, we were all foreigners, and drunk. We needed refuge in the form of increased drunkenness, soft lighting, and the robot politeness of the Japanese so we went to a late night Izakaiya. First, we made mistakes with the ordering counting system. For some reason counting thin...

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha: May 2006

http://www.winesoakedbuddha.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha. Dispatches from the Rucksack Revolution. Monday, May 22, 2006. Alright so we remember Jr and Sr. Grade drifters right? Ernest (not the one scared stupid). Bob (both Dylan and Marley). Hallowed ground. Hallowed ground. I’m reluctant to do this but I’ll give it a try. Highest. You’ve transcended badassitude. Once you die everything you own is in a museum or a church. Either an astetic robes (prophets) or worn out dusty old jeans (Jack, Walt, Che). I don’t think this applies!

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha: February 2006

http://www.winesoakedbuddha.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha. Dispatches from the Rucksack Revolution. Thursday, February 23, 2006. Who Loves the Sun? Who Cares that it is Shining? I love the sun, and I care that it is shining. The sun was out for three consecutive days. To my Santa Barbara and Thailand brethren and sistren this is as uneventful a statement as, ‘time continued to pass’, but for pale Toyama folk this is miraculous. What tidings of comfort and joy the sun gave us. 1) It’s a nice day. 2) It’s snowin’ like a motherfucker.

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha: Phuket City, Thailand

http://www.winesoakedbuddha.blogspot.com/2006/09/phuket-city-thailand.html

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha. Dispatches from the Rucksack Revolution. Friday, September 29, 2006. Phuket City, Thailand. My previous city profiles were all pretty standard, its at this point were things start to get a bit off the rails. Keep in mind here that I’m profiling the people and the city I knew of, not necessarily my part in the city. Because Im not Thai, I guess I’ll look at the Phuket lifestyle from an expat perspective. During the week its fake names brand clothes and a tie, after work it’s...

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha: The Last Slow Dance in Roppongi

http://www.winesoakedbuddha.blogspot.com/2006/11/last-slow-dance-in-roppongi.html

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha. Dispatches from the Rucksack Revolution. Thursday, November 16, 2006. The Last Slow Dance in Roppongi. It was the last slow dance in Roppongi. I was there dancing with a girl I’d never spoken a word to. A Japanese girl, with soft cute face, almond eyes, dressed smart- but otherwise difficult to describe. Her right hand rested quietly on my chest. She felt feminine and oddly familiar like the incarnation of some Ernest Hemingway goddess made real. Beppu, Kyushuu, Japan.

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha: Short term goals revisited. Long term goals posted.

Sutras of a Winesoaked Buddha. Dispatches from the Rucksack Revolution. Friday, October 27, 2006. Short term goals revisited. Long term goals posted. Short term goals revisited. 1) Fix the fucking shirt. Done and done! Total time spent 2 minutes. 2) Go to a museum. Check! Went to Kyoto castle (which is like a museum), the Golden Temple, Silver Temple, and walked around a bunch of Japanese gardens, which is also like a museum. 4) Haircut. Done and done! 1) Live in a big city for at least a year. I’m a...

American Expat: November 2005

http://bbgriffith.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 28, 2005. It concerns me because it is yet another addition to the pile of mounting evidence I have accumulated that asserts that there is absolutely no rhyme or reason in the country. Case in point: the sheer number of middle aged people in this city driving around with pot-leaf air fresheners that have no idea that they are pot-leaf air fresheners. It's ludicrous. Recieve a random extra paycheck for something no doubt very ordinary, like. This last one in particular bothers me. I am no...

American Expat: January 2006

http://bbgriffith.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 30, 2006. I, on the other hand, tried to grind a big rail and fell on my neck. I heard a popping, but it was just my upper spinal area, so it's all cool. Seriously though, I was very afraid for a few seconds, until I realized that I still had full mobility. What can I say? If you try to go big, you just might fall big. Or in my case, you just might fall big when you are trying to do absolutely nothing but go straight across a piece of metal. What is the deal? And "Maybe it's for security,...

http://bbgriffith.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 30, 2006. This week we got the performance reports back from the students, which was rather humorous. When I was in High School and I filled out those class evaluations, I always wondered if they did anything. Now that I’m on the other side, I can safely say no they do not. My 898 percent approval rating had the highest number of returned surveys, and it was 50%. In the class I teach with Obata 14% of the students replied. That works out to three kids. The first is this. I came across th...

Occidental, Not Oriental. Someday we'll be drinking with the seldom seen kid. Wednesday, June 28, 2006. The other morning I woke up looking like this:. And it occurred to me that maybe I should get a haircut. And maybe see a doctor. Actually, a haircut first occurred to me a few weeks ago when Robin began to call me Farrah. At first I was flattered; who wouldn’t want to be compared to that crime-fighting tawny-haired angel? I should never have let you near me! Posted by Geoff at 10:00 AM. You Can Check O...

Tuesday, February 28, 2006. I've seen a lot of Japanese rocking out lately, and I don't mean in general (although they sometimes rock out in general), I mean with actual instruments on actual stages. I believe the rule for the concert was that the lead singer had to be female, but other than that, no holds barred. There were six or so different bands and each put on a thirty minute set. It had everything from pop to punk, and beer. Lots and lots of beer. Here is a picture of the dude rocking his face off.

American Expat: April 2006

http://bbgriffith.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 28, 2006. You may remember a while ago that I wrote about trying out for (and acquiring) a part in the Toyama Charity Show. After that I didn't write anything about it. For four months. Some perceptive readers have asked me how this whole venture is going. I recently wrote an open letter to the two directors of the Charity Show that I feel adequately sums up my experiences thus far. Enjoy. Please not assign us with any more responsibility. Could it have been our girlish giggling? The fact t...

Occidental, Not Oriental. Someday we'll be drinking with the seldom seen kid. Wednesday, March 22, 2006. We booked a bus tour to the DMZ. Any of my uni friends reading this would grimace at this thought, but such is the way with the DMZ; you cannot get in to the world's largest minefield without an escort. Before I left my 11-year-old nephew sent me an email:. Woah, NK or SK? North Korea or south Korea) chances are if your goin to NK youll get taken down by anti air! And any other military things you see?

http://bbgriffith.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 30, 2005. Last night I went out for a few drinks with my insurance agent and his brother. Anyway, about two beers and three or so shots of sake later the next dish comes out. It looks red and mushy, clearly a meat of some type. Ok, but what is it? I can see that, what type of meat though? You can just try it.". Ok, you know that stuff,". He says, pointing at the red mush, "its not just meat.". I ask, warily. You mean to tell me I just ate Baby Beluga? This liver, it is. Today a man name...

Friday, June 30, 2006. Oh, and they’ve finally decided it was Ok to turn on the air-conditioner at work. That’s nice of them. How thoughtful. Never mind that I’ve lost four pounds of water-weight over the past two weeks. I was wondering when everyone would realize that having the windows open doesn’t do a damn thing on days when there’s. Sorry Guy, wait until June 30th, that’s the date to turn on the AC. Cold as a witches tit? Not so fast there Ace, it’s not time to turn on the heat yet. Worthless filler...

Just a girl and the internet and the story of their love. All winter we stayed in, making light. Of the day, watching the clouds become. Elephants, replicas of Italy, beards. We called it trivial, what was outside. Of us It was so much fun. When the nights came with their villainous. Capes, we said what a bad movie. We live in, and wondered who was. To be saved this time, ha ha. And weren’t the clouds low these days,. Like aristocrats. It was a way. Of passing time. We believed each of us. And when your ...

The drunken pen writes the sober heart …. Why Are We So Afraid Of Each Other? July 23, 2015. We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Famous words from FDR in his inaugural address. As it turns out, some of these reunion-ers are scared. Nervous is more like it. Perhaps afraid that after all these years, wrinkles, extra pounds and gray hairs they won’t somehow measure up. Or have anything to say. Anything interesting, that is. They are excited. But also worried. And to this I say why? I was just starting ...
