The Sanborns of Eagle River built the Chanticleer Inn. On the shores of Voyageur Lake in 1922. They built twelve cottages, a lodge with a restaurant and bar, and a twelve-unit summer motel with two shared bathrooms. The resort changed hands a few times before John Alward laid claim to the property after seeing an ad in the Chicago Tribune in 1951.
