I borrowed a book ( The Alchemist. Did they think they had things pretty well worked out? Often while everything might look right in our lives, and while we might be pretty happy, there is something missing. But you could say, God talked. And it was Jesus. Calling those disciples to follow him, that's easy! I am turning my ho...

Sursum Corda: March 2008

http://withthyspirit.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 29, 2008. Second Sunday in Easter, Year A. Still Doubting" - John Granville Gregory. We are Thomas. And that isn't a bad thing! Thomas had the courage to admit his doubt. Thomas is not our warning, but our model. He was honest with his sisters and brothers, and he was honest with God. And for that honesty, he was rewarded. As one of my favorite hymns says: Ask and it shall be given unto you. Thomas revealed his need, he asked, and Christ came. Have you believed because you have seen me?

Sursum Corda: May 2008

Sunday, May 18, 2008. It is "Trinity Sunday" today in the Episcopal church; otherwise known as the Sunday priests all across our nation try with all their might to explain to their congregations a concept that completely and totally baffles them (the priests, not the congregation)! I'm never one to shrink from something I don't understand, or to be afraid to tackle the unexplainable. So here it comes: Trinity Sunday. Our psalm today ends: "O LORD our Governor, how exalted is your Name in all the world!

Sursum Corda: February 2008

Lectionary meditation: Lent 4. Friday, February 29, 2008. 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Psalm 23, Ephesians 5:8-14, John 9:1-41. Rise from the dead,. And Christ will shine on you." - Ephesians 5:14b. If you grew up in the 70s or 80s you might have the same reaction as I to this passage. Sleeper, awake! My mind flashes first to the startling blue eyes of Paul Atrides and I hear the words: "The sleeper has awoken! Yes, Frank Herbert's beloved epic: Dune. Seem a strange topic for a lectionary meditation or sermon?

Sursum Corda: June 2007

http://withthyspirit.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html

Lectionary meditation for 7/1/2007. Friday, June 29, 2007. The lectionary for this week can be found here. For some reason this morning my mood is black. Perhaps black is not the right word. It is heavy, a stone in my breast. I needed to hear "Be Still my Soul" as I drove to work this morning. But instead the CD player kept shuffling through songs of loss and separation. Thank God I don't have to preach on this lesson. I wouldn't make it without crying. But it took a very long time to reach that place an...

With Timbrel and Dancing

With Timbrel and Dancing. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. The Times We Live In. I spent the last week swinging from despair to pride to grief to hope.I'm sure many of you had those same feelings as we followed the news about the Charleston shootings, the capture of the perpetrator, the debates about the Confederate flag, the statements of our President, the Supreme Court decisions, and now the funerals. Watercolor, sharpie pen, and prismacolor pencil in Strathmore mixed-media sketchbook. The Times We Live In.
