Women’s Liberation Halfway House History. WLHH was established in 1974 by a collective of women who saw the need for a safe place for women and children wanting to leave situations of family violence. This establishment grew from the Melbourne Women’s Liberation Movement and as a result the focus was very much on the empowerment of women and children from a societal and political context. Work was on a voluntary basis and funding was limited to donations received by a variety of sources and donations.

What is Family Violence? Family Violence is the repeated use of violent, threatening, coercive or controlling behaviour by an individual against a family member(s), or someone with whom they have, or have had an intimate relationship including carers. Currently only certain behaviours and actions defined as family violence are criminal offences, any behaviour that constitutes family violence is unacceptable.
