Upscaling (enlarging) digital images. I wondered if a 36mp digital camera might come close to 4x5 in feel- the combination of tone and resolution and butter and grain that make large format what it is. All images are with a Sony A7r camera, July 2015. 4x5 (Delta 100 film) scanned at 3200 dpi (or 4800 dpi) has far more dpi than a native digital file, even from 36mp cameras. But on looking, it seemed that the actual clarity, or feeling of detail and texture, was similar- or better! That’s the point, right?

Packing one of my three 4x5 cameras (I use an old junker overseas), a reporter’s tripod, a few boxes of film, and a hand light meter- plus odds and ends like black tape and several Wratten neutral density filters- I usually have more camera gear in my backpack than clothes and toothpaste.

THE PINE BUSH, ALBANY NY. But it’s a long term project, the patient stabilizing of this mosaic of acres, and one day, maybe in a hundred years, it will have qualities more like it had a couple hundred years ago, limited species settling on sandy barrens. So why photograph it? To be honest, partly because it isn’t easy. There are no obvious scenic moments, which I grew tired of when I was 20. That doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful. Because it is quite stunning. In ways you don’t expect.
