미레나는 루프와 호르몬제의 장점을 합친 피임법입니다. 장치 안쪽에 ‘레보놀게스트렐’이라는 프로게스테론(황체호르몬)이 52mg 담겨 있습니다. 자궁 내에 설치된 미레나는 매일 아주 적은 양의 호르몬(약 20 )을 방출하여 5년간 장기적으로 피임효과를 볼 수 있으며, 피임 성공률은 99% 이상으로 현재까지 가장 신뢰할 수 있는 피임 효과를 가집니다. 또한 호르몬은 자궁 내에서만 국소적으로 작용하므로, 전신적인 호르몬의 영향이 거의 없어 부작용이 드물다는 장점이 있습니다. 누바링은 직경 5.4cm, 두께 4mm인 투명한 플라스틱 링 모양으로 매우 유연하고 부드러워 스스로 질 안에 삽입하여 사용하도록 되어 있습니다. 질내에 삽입된 누바링에서는 매일 에스트라디올 15ug(에스트로겐)과 에토노게스트렐 120ug(프로게스테론)이 방출되어 피임 효과 뿐 아니라 생리주기 조절의 효과를 가지게 됩니다 스스로 사용할수 있지만 산부인과에서 의사의 처방을 받아야 구입할 수 있습니다.
