Thursday, August 20, 2009. Some new ones - mostly florals. Experiment with a genre used now and again by Gary Jenkins - floral with landscape vignette. In this case, the vignette is another scene of North Dakota sunflower fields taken from the train window on our 45th anniversary trip. 6" x 4" ( sold). An incredible gladiolus from our garden, a random survivor from last year. and from a random assortment. 4" x 6". Available; contact me for for more information. Sunday, August 16, 2009. Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Certifiable Guide to Tweaking the Beaufort Easel. Excerpts. You can download the entire document as a PDF if you want. Download the whole thing, all 2.8 mb, here. I’ve purchased my last easel. That, of course, is a joke. Those who paint never could possibly purchase their last easel until (as Stapleton Kearns says) the death bunny comes hop-hop-hoppin’ along. Planted firmly on granite shores north of Boston.). The Gloucester - for real plein air painters. When you first meet it, ...

Friday, November 5, 2010. Good Old Walter Foster: How to Begin Painting for FUN. Back long ago, Walter T. Foster published a large number of 10 x 14 inch books - really, booklets, since most were 32 pages or fewer - that covered many a subject around how to do art. There is some good news: Walter Foster publishing is still alive and still publishing how-to art books, some of which are top-notch. One of the latter, How to Paint Plein Air Landscapes. But, back to the past. But there are a number that are g...

Could be France, could be England, could even be 19th C. America. But it's France, Annecy to be exact. The windows (especially the reflected sky and foliage) and much of the flowers are based on a glorious photo by Michele*mp, found here. Note the many deserved accolades her photo has received. DGehman's Art Emporium: February 2014
http://dgehman.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 22, 2014. I had to guess how to create a new entry. So, I figured it out. While I was enjoying Stapleton Kearns's Snowcamp in January, for the first time I came face-to-face with the Gloucester easel. Stape of course had his, and fellow classmate James Cook had one as well. There are two on the market. The first is a fine, hand-made version from Tobin Nadeau, the Take-It-Easel, available from http:/ www.takeiteasel.com/index#nice6. Both Stape's and James Cook's were Take-It-Easels.

Wednesday, February 24, 2010. Samuel Chamberlain - a newly-found source. A long time back, I became interested in what architecture historians call "vernacular architecture." Old houses is the better term. The plain, L-plan Ohio farmhouses were the first, then my uncle's house in Canal Winchester, now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Christian Gayman house in Canal Winchester, Ohio. After an enthusiastic reception of the pricey Domestic Architecture of Rural France, Sam apparently never m...

Sunday, January 10, 2010. Ain't new for the rest of the world. My idea to paint on prints is not new, of course - I keep finding examples by others. And I've run into some technical problems that require cash, and/or changes in the ambient conditions here in frozen Massachusetts. the key one is the support for the printed fabric. Tried making my own. didn't work. Tried foamcore. not to my liking. Meanwhile, I still have plenty to learn about brush handling, color, and. and. almost anything you wa...

Thursday, August 26, 2010. World's most modified paint box. I own a paint box. Not a "pochade box" or to keep it strictly Frenchified, 'case de pochade.'. What I have is a paint box. It was so named when it was new and never shall 'pochade' roll from my lips (or, more Frenchy, nose). But back to the point. It has a couple of old Jamaica stickers on it:. The original owner did some modifications himself. replaced the totally inadequate small hinges between top and bottom with a sturdy, full-length pia...
