I also placed rubber feet on the bottom to lift the base up. I finished the base with a clear satin finish to showcase the different woods used in the project. Sunday, April 24, 2011. I was able to get the shelf finished with several coats of Minwax Semi-gloss water based poly. With the hidden mounting bracket the shelf has clean lines and appears to just float on the wall.
