The History of Wood Island Life Saving Station. The History of Wood Island Life Saving Station. In 1827, the Maine State Legislature ceded Wood Island to the Federal Government. The U.S. Navy is reported to have constructed a barracks there around that time, however, an 1865 photo shows only a barren island. By 1889, a military hospital had been erected along with several outbuildings. Spanish-American War prisoners were quarantined there to prevent the spread of Yellow Fever.

Latitude 43 03′ 50″ Longitude 70 41′ 52″. From the shore in Kittery Point Wood Island appears to have not only a Life Saving Station building but also a lighthouse. In fact there are two small islands near each other at the entrance to the Piscatequa River with one building for each island; Wood Island and Whaleback Ledge. The Whaleback Light is owned by a different non-profit, The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lights, and it too is being restored and plans to open to the public. Click Here to Learn More.
