Woodsman Crafts

Thursday, 6 August 2015. Decorated eating spoon designs post Spoonfest 2015. I'm into Sami symbols again and elements - wind, fire, earth, water and trying out a few ideas. I cracked out the milk paint and ochre pigments again to add a little colour. I was a little unsure if I should follow this imaginary, but it feels right, I'm drawn to it constantly. Plus the Mrs likes it which helps! What do you think? Be honest now or I wont be able to make for the customer. Tuesday, 21 July 2015. Monday, 6 July 2015.

Woodsman Crafts: October 2014

http://woodsmancrafts.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, 18 October 2014. All 22-23 cm long and made from Norway Maple. Tuesday, 14 October 2014. Hunter Gatherer challenge - Part Three. That hinge stayed like that all the way through the session but snapped on the next shot after this picture, but the bow delivered 12 fast arrows with a few hitting Bambi. My water routine. Millbank bag, followed by boiling. Simple and effective. Spoonage. Half cooking half eating. As with all bushcraft kit, a jack of all trades. After finally finding a Beech tree in ...

Woodsman Crafts: More decorated spoons

http://woodsmancrafts.blogspot.com/2014/11/more-decorated-spoons.html

Saturday, 29 November 2014. Milk paint has gotten a hold of me. Nothings safe now! I chip carved some more spoons recently, so I added a splash of paint and oil to jazz them up a little. I only used a frosts 106 carving knife for all the carving and decoration work. They work so well. I have a chip carving knife I made from an old penknife but I just go with the frosts as it so easy. Most are Sami inspired with a few doodles from looking at things that were lying around the room at the time.

Woodsman Crafts: June 2015

http://woodsmancrafts.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, 18 June 2015. Blogging, fb, and what Ive been up to. Hello folks, Its been a busy few months and a long time since a new blog enty. Before I waffle on about what Ive been doing, are there preferences to what I could blog about? Ive been using Facebook recently due to being short on time and it being so easy to share comments with people, but is there still an interest on blog sites? I'm currently studying a Practical Ethnobotany course with the Woodcraft School. Ive been making lots of spoons, ...

Woodsman Crafts: June 2014

http://woodsmancrafts.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, 14 June 2014. Kuksa and Bowl Carving Practice. Choose your log, and split it just away from the central pith. Here Im using a froe, but two hatchets or Wooden wedges work well too. Tidy up the split surface with an axe making sure its flat, and pop it onto the Bowl Horse or other chosen method of fixing. A good method of holding like this makes a huge difference when using the tools. Go forth with your Azde. This one is made by Hans Karlsson. It is excellent. All finished and oiled with Flaxsee...

Woodsman Crafts: November 2013

http://woodsmancrafts.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, 30 November 2013. Oak handled Scandinavian style bushcraft knife. Well, I had to crack in the end and decided to make another knife. I've had a break for a while as I wanted to do other things bushcraft wise and of course real life also gets in the way. There' a lot that goes into these knives from forging out the steel, grinding, heat treatment, sharpening, and multi section handles. There great to do though and very absorbing in both attention and time! A month ago I was demonstrating spoon c...

A blog about experimenting with and learning bushcraft and survival skills in Northern Europe and the UK. Fire by hand drill. Tuesday, 26 April 2011. Fallkniven U2, WM1 and F1. A nice little trio! I really do like these knives and have never had any trouble with them. The u2 is basically a pocket scalpel sturdy, easy to sharpen excellent! Weirdly the u 2 cost me more than the F1 which was approx 50 quid when I got it, u2 was 60, a bit expensive but worth it I think. Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device.

Thursday, September 11, 2014. The South Fork of the Flambeau River heaves steam. Into the cool morning air as it cuts through the woods,. Twisting and turning its way down to meet the north fork. Time to switch lures. Of course the tradeoff to this was setting me back two-fold. Not only was I not catching any fish because I refused to give another lure a chance, I was also not practicing the knot I really needed to learn if I wanted to be successful down the road.
