Random thoughts on axes, knives, axe use, woodworking, bushcraft, wilderness survival, camping, hiking, and gear review. Thursday, August 13, 2015. It doesn’t seem like a good system for someone carrying their gear in a backpack, but the concept can certainly be adopted to such use. Monday, August 10, 2015. I start wi...

Wood Trekker: Weedless Lure Set Up Tutorial

http://woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2015/08/weedless-lure-set-up-tutorial.html

Random thoughts on axes, knives, axe use, woodworking, bushcraft, wilderness survival, camping, hiking, and gear review. Monday, August 10, 2015. Weedless Lure Set Up Tutorial. I start with a gummy lure and an offset shank hook. In the above picture you see a Havoc 4 inch Pit Boss lure, Skeet Reese Design, and a #4/0 offset shank hook. You can use a regular hook of a similar size, but it works better with the offset shank. The reason it works is that when fish go after the lure, they hit it. When the...

Random thoughts on axes, knives, axe use, woodworking, bushcraft, wilderness survival, camping, hiking, and gear review. Thursday, August 6, 2015. A Ban on Trophy Hunting? Be Careful What You Wish For! A 1909 image of Theodore Roosevelt, pioneer and leader in wildlife conservation, on a hunt in Africa. Of course, we all know that this will last about another week and then everyone will forget about it all together. Do you remember the big outrage over rhino hunting a year or so back? I can certainly go t...

Wood Trekker: Not All Tinder Fungus Is The Same

http://woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2015/05/not-all-tinder-fungus-is-same.html

Random thoughts on axes, knives, axe use, woodworking, bushcraft, wilderness survival, camping, hiking, and gear review. Monday, May 18, 2015. Not All Tinder Fungus Is The Same. You guys may remember that a few weeks back I did a post where I referenced a show where one type of fungus was shown, but another type actually used for the fire lighting. Well, I was out and about and figured I would pick up two of the most often confused fungi and give you a quick comparison. And Horseshoe Fungus (. Chaga is m...

Random thoughts on axes, knives, axe use, woodworking, bushcraft, wilderness survival, camping, hiking, and gear review. Friday, May 8, 2015. Trip Report: Surf and Turf 3/2/15 - 3/3/15. Sorry for the delayed trip report guys. I has been a busy week. This is my trip report from last weekend. It was a busy one, and I covered a lot of ground. It was nice to follow the streams. The weather was pretty warm that day, and having ready access to water was nice. By mid morning I arrived at my destination, which t...

dgrblog: Update Samsung Europa - Tesco Mobile

http://dgrblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/update-samsung-europa-tesco-mobile.html

Saturday, March 5, 2011. Update Samsung Europa - Tesco Mobile. When it came to updating my phone using the Samsung Kies software there was a bit of a problem. The update failed and on trying to restore my phone back to the original settings this failed as well. Now I had a phone that was doing nothing at all. On visiting the Tesco store they gave me some advice but this did not help. The phone is now working great and he repeating texts I was getting from O2 users have disappeared.

The Maine Outdoorsman: Beat Summer's HEAT with DULUTH!

http://www.themaineoutdoorsman.com/2015/07/beat-summers-heat-with-duluth.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Beat Summer's HEAT with DULUTH! The hike to the summit was typical for summer in Maine, hot, muggy and buggy. Tough conditions requiring long sleeves and pants to keep the biting hordes away but also requiring a light enough fabric to allow one to remain dry and comfortable. These are not the conditions where cotton thrives, as once damp; cotton stays damp and uncomfortable and tends to rub a person in the most delicate places. And Dry on the Fly. For more Maine outdoor adventure p...

http://www.mungosaysbah.com/2011/02/redux-tutorial-on-how-to-build-coke-can.html

Redux: A Tutorial on How To Build a Coke Can Stove for Hiking, Bushcraft and Camping. I was just looking over my Coke can camping stove tutorial and thought it might be a good time to post it again - it is such an easy stove to make, and lots of fun. Okay, following up on a post about emergency preparedness. I saw a pile of Fondu Fuel bottles containing denatured alcohol. Boiling water is obviously important when camping or hiking or during a power outage. With one you can make hot drinks, heat meals...

Mungo Is Still Mad About Wool Blankets. So this is a rewrite of an older post. I'm going to start writing more again soon - but with the cold winter upon us here in Ontario, I wanted to share my Wool Blankets post again. Stay warm out there! So instead, I occasionally stop in at the neighbourhood thrift shop and browse the rack at the back of the floor where you can pick up used comforters, sheets and towels. Nearly every time I go there, there are one or two blankets waiting for me. A backpack can be qu...

http://www.mungosaysbah.com/2010/12/20-minute-knife-sharpening-board.html

20 Minute Knife Sharpening Board Tutorial. This little project should take you about 20 minutes at most. Mors Kochanski recommends making one of these in his book 'Bushcraft' (of which I have a signed copy! I had all the ingredients needed in my basement: 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper, double-sided carpet tape, a scrap of wood for mounting the sandpaper, a cutting board (another scrap of wood), a pencil and a piece of paper. Then I carefully and evenly adhered the sandpaper roughly positioned over the w...

Here are a couple of spoons I carved from a single chunk of white ash (fraxinus americana) I gathered from the park behind where I live in Toronto. The already-dead tree had collapsed in a windstorm last year. To finish them, I soaked them in olive oil for a day. The tree was likely the victim of the Emerald Ash Borer. I used my Gransfors-Bruks Small Forest Axe to cut up the log, and my Mora ' Classic Original 1. Well, I've just discovered that Mora has restarted making and is selling the Mora 510. From ...

http://www.mungosaysbah.com/2009/07/desperately-cleaning-my-msr-dragonfly.html

Desperately Cleaning my MSR Dragonfly Stove and Then Realizing I'd Plugged It Into the Fuel Bottle Wrong To Begin With. It is a great stove, it can simmer or roar loudly on full bore. It can be very noisy, but I've not got any complaints about that. The arms fold out and spring-load back to the element, to allow it to store down small. The arms keep the burner off of the ground to help insulate the unit, and the arms fold over to make a pot holder. I pulled the fuel pump out of the fuel cannister, filled...

The Everette Hale quote is one of my favorites I have adopted it…. I am only one woodworker, but I am one. I can’t do everything in woodworking, but I can do something.
