World-class thinking about music, business, publishing and the general world of media" - Campaign. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Frank Sinatra was good enough to sing off-key just to make a point. In 1959 Frank Sinatra played two shows in Australia. To try something different, and presumably to keep costs down, he decided he was going to be accompanied by a quintet led by the vibes player Red Norvo. As Adam Gopnik points out. The downside of Sinatra's perfectionism could be a tendency to chide musicians to the...

If you’ve never been to a Word In Your Ear evening before, this is how it works. It usually takes place at The Islington. Which is helpfully located in Islington, not far from Angel tube station and King’s Cross. The Islington is a comfortable little pub with a brilliant back room with a low stage which is ideal for the presentation of spoken word entertainment in front of seated audiences. We usually talk around pictures which we display on their flat screen television handily placed between the sofas.

It was Johnnie Walker who got me interested in Bluetooth headphones. I bought the same Sony MDR-10RBT. Model as he did and I'm pretty pleased with them. I've no idea whether Tidal, the paid-for music streaming service that's being fronted by Jay-Z, will turn out to be a winner or will quietly fade away like so many other digital music initiatives before it, but one thing I do know. There's a fundamental problem with using performers as the public face of this kind of enterprise.

World-class thinking about music, business, publishing and the general world of media" - Campaign. Monday, August 31, 2015. A perfect book to read now that all the music in the world's at your fingertips. Discussions about music online tend to be dominated by the question of paydays for professional musicians. Will they be able to make a living in the way they used to? The first thing you learn from Electric Shock: From the Gramophone to the iPhone - 125 Years of Pop Music. The second thing I've realised...

World-class thinking about music, business, publishing and the general world of media" - Campaign. Friday, May 29, 2015. When Duke Ellington tore it up and grandad just applauded politely. On November 7th 1940 the Duke Ellington Band played a ballroom in Fargo, North Dakota. Two young radio engineers got permission to record the shows on condition that they didn't issue them commercially. (The full story of how they eventually came to be issued is here. It doesn't matter what you think of jazz or of Elli...
