Sternly Blunt: January 2014
http://sternlyblunt.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 13, 2014. I attended a dear friend's baby shower a few years back. One of the things she requested of her guests was to write parenting advice down on a 3x5 index card, for those of us who had children. She handed me the card and said, motioning toward my daughter, "Just write down how to do that. Like, I want to have one of her when it's all said and done.". I without hesitation wrote the following:. To minimize, conceal, and deny. Society taught me that love is always enough, to look fo...

the stories we tell each other: February 2011
http://thestorieswetelleachother.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
The stories we tell each other. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Arriving in New Orleans. Drove into New Orleans last night, in time to run to this:. Drinking coffee and catching up on writing and adjusting to this balmy weather. The stories we tell each other. Reasons to go to Oxford, Mississippi. There are a lot. Everybody I spent time with is connected in some form or fashion through The William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation. A Survey of Gee's Bend Quilts. The stories we tell each other. After ...

the stories we tell each other: Home Sweet Home
http://thestorieswetelleachother.blogspot.com/2011/06/home-sweet-home.html
The stories we tell each other. Wednesday, June 1, 2011. For the month of May, I have been home again in my beloved North Carolina. It's been amazing to be home with the folks I love and the work I love here, to be back in the heat after months of travelling in the cold, to have some time and space to process and share what I learned in the first big leg of this journey. This week I hit the road again for the Northeast. Keep an eye out for the next series of dispatches from the road. Elephant in the Dark.

Sternly Blunt: April 2013
http://sternlyblunt.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 22, 2013. Skink and I were at a local park recently, playing in the breeze and the sunshine. It was so sunshiny as a matter of fact, I had stripped him of his pants and he toddled around in the warm spring air wearing nothing but a onesie. As we were about to leave I noticed two little girls playing by the park entrance. They were having a blast, laughing and completely carefree. As we approached them, one of the girls came running up to me:. I'm Kesha and I'm four and I give great hugs.

Sternly Blunt: The Ghost of Teenagers Past
http://sternlyblunt.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-ghost-of-teenagers-past.html
Saturday, October 27, 2012. The Ghost of Teenagers Past. I have learned a lot during my journey as a mother. I got a crash-course in parenting when Morgan became a teenager. Oh.My. She was a tricky one, but for the most part was way more saintly than me in my teenage years. She was still abducted by aliens and replaced by a sarcastic, "it's not my fault! Procrastinating clone. They brought her back, eventually. Damn aliens. I have written before about my mom's strategy. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Sternly Blunt: Good Times
http://sternlyblunt.blogspot.com/2011/07/good-times.html
Thursday, July 28, 2011. Cleanest apartment in the entire building. She saved the day. Good times, indeed. I remember watching that episode and thinking, "She got. For keeping her apartment clean? But, cleaning is. Mix my clear recollection of '80's sitcoms with a loathing of germs and a touch (okay, maybe more than a touch) of OCD and thereyouhaveit: an extremist housekeeper. That's at least the surface of my issues. There are deeper layers, but those are for me and a therapist to hash out. And I didn't...

Give me a minute: At a Loss
http://moment42.blogspot.com/2014/04/at-lost.html
Give me a minute. Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Didn't bat an eye. I said her name. Pick up the Phone Please. Walk run make a note. Dial ring measure rope. Ring ring ring ten. Doors locked razor knife. Cutting loose a kite. We could give it time. Pace hide shiver wallow. Peerless ache throat narrows. Ring ring ring ten. Hills valleys fog whips. Over the crest of unsure ends. Bellowing cows drift in the haze. Smoke dark shadows on the ridge. She asks, "So what a beautiful day". I find that is all it is.
