The culture of food. Sunday, October 23, 2011. You would think that after the extreme wierdness of fish-stepping and singing sea-life just about anything I encounter here in Tanzania would seem decidedly mundane. But my trip has been getting all the more curious as I go along, and Christmas was no exception. It was Time for Mass. I suppose this update amounts to my Happy Holiday Message- and what can I say? Or even better, haven't you always wanted an excuse to call Tanzania? There's no better reason tha...

Work Songs: Mongolia Post 2

http://worksongs.blogspot.com/2011/10/imagine-this-youre-mongol-herdsman-out.html

The culture of food. Sunday, October 23, 2011. Imagine this: you’re a Mongol herdsman out on your camel, getting ready to move your flock to a new pasture. It’s April- lambing season on the steppe- and you notice one of your ewes lying down a hundred yards from the group, next to a hummock of dried grass. Beside her rests a newborn lamb. My teacher, a herder-musican named Tserendavaa (traditionally, Mongols do not keep surnames), uses khoomei whenever a newborn sheep, goat, horse, cow or camel is orphane...

Work Songs: Mongolia

http://worksongs.blogspot.com/2011/10/mongolia.html

The culture of food. Sunday, October 23, 2011. Tserendavaa's ger with a corrall for helping with livestock duties. This is were I spent most of my two months. Behind the dark clouds loom the massive (12,000 feet! Grabbing an orphaned youngster for feeding time. This is louder than it looks- the baby is protesting loudly and the man wrestling her is laughing. In the foreground Tserendavaa prepares to sing and in the background Haar Nuur (Black Lake) looks more azur than ebony. On a notable rock near Khovd.

Wednesday, April 26, 2006. So I've been preping. For my trip to Sao. Paulo and Rio and part of that preparation has been checking forums like "The Worlds Most Dangers Cities! I know these are not the kind of things you want to be looking at before flying into a city that has been called the 3rd most dangerous city in the world-but it's best to be informed. That said. It seems to me that Sao. Paulo and Rio are just as unsafe as any other densly. That people see in movies or on TV. Paulo are. But the r...

Friday, January 07, 2005. A Deeper Shade of Soul. I've been holding out on this for a while now, but now I think I'm ready to let this one out into the world. Not that this album is super-rare or obscure.no, that's not it at all. I've been holding out because I want to do this justice. Let's take it from the top. Now, of all the albums and artist I could have selected for this, I choose Ray Barretto's. Trip off of this. Posted by Radio Ríos at 14:26. Monday, January 03, 2005. Gettin' Funky in Brooklyn.

Monday, October 31, 2005. On Critical Consciousness, Being Critical, Critiquing.and Community. I'm not just being idealistic, I think I'm being more fair to people who suffer the worst of oppression. What good is analyzing history gonna do for people who have to rebuild their house right there after the hurricane? What good is to go over and over about U.S. imperialism when my students - and all Korean students- are gonna still have to know English to get into college? He starts off with some definitions:.

Saturday, September 24, 2005. Wellsort of. I'm back in the UK now, but I jotted down a few things while I was in Paris last weekend. To start, I have to say that Paris is a much more impressive city than London. I guess for a lot of people this is old news, but it's my first time in Europe so I'm still doing that compare/contrast thing. At first I have to say it pissed me off. Who wants to be American in at a time like this? Posted by Radio Ríos @ 5:12 AM. Monday, September 19, 2005. I HATE KOREAN BLOGGER.

Saturday, August 27, 2005. La Fería del Maíz. What is the benefit that we will recieve from your being here? This question terrified me, as it is what I am unsure about myself! I don t know what I have to offer, other than an open mind, a willingness to work and learn, and a desire to go home with an increased understanding and ability to tell people why Fair Trade and cooperatives do or do not make that much difference. Eek! I can hardly believe it, hardly hold in my excitement! Friday, August 26, 2005.

Thursday, June 22, 2006. So Ghana stuck it to the man and Brazil moves closer to a sixth World Cup title. Am I happy. . .ohh yeah. Only problem-Ghana faces Brazil on Tuesday. Either way I come out winning, but I would have really liked to see Ghana go far. Who knows, maybe Ghana will upset the world and take Brazil. Either way, today was a good day. Posted by Radio Ríos at 17:30. Saturday, June 10, 2006. Posted by Radio Ríos at 23:40. Back from Rio. . . For some fresh beats. Peace and love.
