Tuesday, 4 August 2015. A shot in the dark! In March of this year, Odette. Was visiting her grandfather Tony Curtis. In Newbury, UK. Tony was talking about his life in Zimbabwe and he mentioned my name to Odette. He was wondering what had happened to me! So I started correspondence with Odette and we arranged to meet up. I drove down on the 2nd/3rd August (over 1,400 Kms)! Just before the turn off to Montagu. It is still winter here! The southern edge of the Karoo biome. Big, wide open spaces. It was a c...

Worldbirder: July 2014

http://worldbirder.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 31 July 2014. My Two - One girl! Rowan - a happy girl! Graduated on 29th July. It had been a long haul for her, because she changed courses after two years, into Biological Sciences. This proved to be a good move for her and she enjoyed her last two years, much more than her first two years there. Before the big event. Ready for the big event. My little girl, all grown up! Friends - happy girls all! Sunday, 27 July 2014. A summer sojurn in England. I flew in to Manchester. Had made a little.

Worldbirder: December 2014

http://worldbirder.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Friday, 26 December 2014. Well, OK, not quite my last Christmas, but my last Christmas in Abu Dhabi! The girls and I have called Abu Dhabi home for over twenty two years: I arrived in August 1992 and Carol and the girls a month later. There have been so many great happenings and changes throughout that time. It has been a wonderful place to bring up the girls and looking back, I feel quite privileged to have led the life I have. There have also been the downsides: Adrian and Simon. Of course, live with m...

Worldbirder: January 2015

http://worldbirder.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 27 January 2015. It is 27th January. Today I drove from Heidelberg. Where I am staying) to Marievale. The weather has been very wet here recently and the roads were not exactly pristine! The main entrance to the sanctuary is now no more. You now continue on the R 42 Delmas Road,. Until you seen the sign telling you to turn left. Do not follow the old directions as in the South African Bird Finder. But the very best was a new mammal for me! It is an extensive area - you really do need. The other ...

http://worldbirder.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, 27 November 2014. Sunday, 16 November 2014. A day out around Al Ain. Amid the red desert sands. Don't get too excited,. Not tickable at this location! It is 16th November. The weather is perfect, so a quick dash to Al Ain was in order. Up at 5 am and arrived at The Green Mubazzarah. At dawn. Also walked down the back wadi. Not many migrants, but Arabian Partridges. From nearly every hill! These birds were introduced a few years ago and are settling in very nicely! Twenty years ago this species.

Worldbirder: September 2014

http://worldbirder.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 September 2014. Sulawesi - Lore Lindu National Park. After only a few hours sleep, we were up well before dawn, birding around Tabang Lake. We were on the dirt road listening for Cinnabar Boobook, eventually we heard it call and managed to see it quite well, but I didn't get any photos, as I was too busy looking at this endemic Owl! As dawn unfolded around us, birds began to appear and the vast majority were new species, as they were endemic to this bird rich island! Birding from the road.

A pet bird is not necessarily low-maintenance. A parrot for example needs a lot of love and attention. When you leave a parrot alone, the bird gets edgy, and may act out. Give it a shoulder to sit on. Give it a treat. Pick out a nice name, and teach it nice things to say. Parrots have a lot of love to give! From the Smithsonian Institute, September 2014.
