Getting to Know Sleepy Vientiane. February 7, 2010. Vientiane (pronounced Viang-chan; literally “City of Sandalwood”) is the capital city of Laos, situated in the Mekong Valley. It is also Laos’s largest city. The estimated population of the city is 200,000 (2005). Vientiane is a 45-minute flight from Hanoi, so one would expect the flight to be economically priced; however, we paid more than $300 for the return tripunbelievable!
