The Middle Room: February 2015

Sunday, February 8, 2015. Movie Review: Jupiter Ascending. This movie is awesome. It's a bizarre amalgamation of genre tropes, put to use in the service of a surprisingly effective (though not at all subtle) theme. The action sequences are fantastic, and the designs are breathtaking. What is Jupiter Ascending? The short answer is Occupy Babylon 5. The long answer is, well. Oh, the good guys also have Sean Bean, who's playing the exact same role he always gets handed. You wouldn't know that judging by the...

Sunday, June 8, 2014. Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow. So there is no confusion, this is not a review: it is a postmortem. It's not uncommon for a movie to falter at the domestic box office. What makes Edge of Tomorrow notable is that it was a great movie. But it was a great movie passed its time; a film released too late. It offers a product that no longer interests the American public, and the results were quite brutal. And yet, if you were come to me and tell me you were going to see one of these movie...

The Middle Room: March 2015

Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Futures Market: Summer 2015. What does the future hold? I'd like you to keep that in mind while you peruse the following list, which represents an annual tradition here in the Middle Room. And why do I want you to focus on this trivial existential concept? The answer is simplicity itself: to distract you from my "predictions," so you're less likely to remember when I'm horribly wrong. Avengers: Age of Ultron. What it'll take to get me in the theater: NA - See you opening weekend.

The Middle Room: Movie Review: Ant-Man
http://welcometothemiddleroom.blogspot.com/2015/07/movie-review-ant-man.html
Sunday, July 19, 2015. Miraculously, it looks we're wrapping up Phase 2 on a positive note. After the departure of Edgar Wright, a lot of us were ready to write this one off. But, despite studio interference and script rewrites, the movie delivered a solid, entertaining experience. It was a fun, humorous superhero heist movie. In the scheme of Phase 2, this was nowhere near as good as Guardians of the Galaxy or Winter Soldier, but I found it a more satisfying experience than The Dark World, Iron Man 3, o...

The Middle Room: December 2014

Wednesday, December 31, 2014. When you only go to the theater 15 times in a year, writing a top 10 list seems like a waste of everyone's time. With that in mind, I prefer a yearly wrap-up ranking every new movie I saw from the absolute worst to the absolute best experience. Re-read that last part - it's significant. These aren't necessary ranked from worst to best, but rather on how much I enjoyed them (or was moved or impressed, in some cases). It is subjective by design. At any rate, here's the list:.

Friday, July 11, 2014. Movie Review: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Okay, so better realized human characters would. Have made watching this an even better theatrical experience. But - again - this is a minor detail; a trivial oversight. Because this was already a fantastic movie, a story of a burgeoning civilization coming into contact with the remnants of one in decline. Toy Remix: October 2013

Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Star Wars Black (6 Inch): Series 2. When the first series of Hasbro's new Star Wars Black line of six inch figures came out, I dusted off my first toy review site, The Clearance Bin, and put together a full review. Seeing as that took about four hours, I'm disinclined to do the same for the second wave, particularly since my overall impression of the line hasn't changed much. However, I have a handful of thoughts I'd like to share, starting with. I'm almost happy to see the f...

Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Posted by Erin Snyder. Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Action League: Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Aquaman Vs. Black Manta. I expected it to take longer than it did: I found this set in a convenience store near the Bronx Zoo. It was going for eight bucks, which is about what I'd expect to pay at retail these days, so I picked it up. Mattel's made far better Action League figures, but ultimately I'm just happy I finally have the entire Justice League. Posted by Erin Snyder.

Toy Remix: December 2011

Saturday, December 31, 2011. DC Action League: Deadman and Martian Manhunter. Christmas, as we all knows, brings toys, especially when one is lucky enough to be married to a woman who appreciates the geekier pursuits of life. Lindsay had her work cut out for her this year: after buying this pack for me, she had to prevent me from jumping the gun and ordering it as soon as I realized it was available online. Somehow she managed to do so without tipping her hand, and I was surprised on Christmas morning.
