WREPNet is a high-speed, high-capacity information network that gives public sector organizations in our community access to the technology needed to be at the forefront of information, education and operational demands. WREPNet uses fibre optic cables that offers dramatically fast network speeds for data and voice communications between sites on the network, and provides cost-effective access to improved information services and emerging technology applications and solutions. WREPNet has approximately 35,000 wired computers and 60,000 wireless clients at 332 sites. WREPNet is one of the most state-of-the-art region-wide information networks in Canada. Approximately 600 kilometres of fibre optic cable is installed to connect the 332 sites throughout Waterloo Region to WREPNet. The fibre optic cable is connected to 10,200 hydro poles. About 50 people worked exclusively on the installation component of the WREPNet project. Many of these were hired because of this project.

The idea of creating a high-speed network linking public organizations in the Waterloo region originated in early 1998. Prescient International Inc., which had successfully implemented an educational network for the North York District School Board, proposed the concept to the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) and offered to partner with them to design and implement the network. Proposal Accepted by the Ministry of Education and Training.
