Steve's Writing: November 2014
http://steveorr.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 8, 2014. What I'm Reading Now - Part One: Graphic Chap Books. From time to time, someone asks, "What are you reading? Most people can provide a quick answer. I, on the other hand, subscribe to the Stephen King school: “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”. I'm pretty picky. It has to be excellent to get my money. But still . . . I read a lot. I call it excellent storytelling. Alt History: Manifest Destiny. TV: Angel and Faith.

Steve's Writing: Triple Crown (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr)
http://steveorr.blogspot.com/2015/06/triple-crown-lectionary-reflection-by.html
Friday, June 12, 2015. Triple Crown (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). Like all competitors, the owners, trainers, and jockeys understand that, regardless of the horse's physical abilities, they must win the mental competitions before the physical ones. For sake of discussion, let's call those mental competitions "races.". RACE ONE - Recognizing that there is a greater performance level: I like that Robert Browning quote for this ".a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for? Stran...

Steve's Writing: The Final Exam (By Steve Orr)
http://steveorr.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-final-exam-by-steve-orr.html
Saturday, June 27, 2015. The Final Exam (By Steve Orr). Does this ring a bell? Or, perhaps you still have bad dreams like this? All through the academic period, the instructor lectures on many, many topics. Then, the day comes for the final exam and . . . Wait. What's all this? You sit in absolute shock as you read question after question on topics you only vaguely recall. If at all. Your beleaguered brain cries out, "How can this be? Much time on stuff that, in the end, didn't help you on the Final Exam.

Steve's Writing: July 2015

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. What If You Could Walk On Water? A Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). Long before Harry Potter captured our collective attention, there was another little boy with amazing abilities. Orson Scott Card's story of Alvin Miller (SEVENTH SON) is set in early 19th century America. But not an America like we learned in school. When the story begins, the year 1776 is a few decades in the past, and it holds no special meaning for the folks living in the European colonies. Yep There it is...

Steve's Writing: Word Gets Around (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr)

Monday, July 20, 2015. Word Gets Around (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). Talk when they have an exciting topic. In this day and age of instantaneous updates to various social media sites, hardly anything stays where it starts. But the exciting stuff girdles the Earth faster than Puck. Something big happens in a remote location, and the next thing you know, it's all over YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. That's all there can be to it. They ran. The news was so. Yes That is the message that...

Steve's Writing: The Riverwalk (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr)
http://steveorr.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-riverwalk-lectionary-reflection-by.html
Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The Riverwalk (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). I'm sitting on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. My objective this morning was to wander along these paths, enjoy the relative coolness of being below-street, take in the beauty, and then, maybe, find a spot to sit and think (and write). All would be ideal but for one thing. When I set out on this little jaunt, I had forgotten something important, failed to take into account something critical. One change can change everything.

Steve's Writing: Just a Carpenter (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr)

Sunday, July 5, 2015. Just a Carpenter (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). Seventh Grade was tough; the toughest of the three years I spent in Junior High School. And one of the toughest parts? Our teacher had strict rules, the chief one being, "No horseplay! Punishments were harsh, public, and immediate. It was a stressful year in an arena fraught with potential pitfalls. I became a carpenter. So why this stroll down memory lane? But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “He’s j...Of all th...

Steve's Writing: April 2014
http://steveorr.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Why Do They Call It Maundy Thursday? Growing up in a very uncomplicated christian tradition, we didn't celebrate Biblical events as distinct days or nights of the year. We didn't have a church calendar to follow. We didn't divide the year into periods of Advent, Ordinary Time, Lent, etc. There was no Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, or Good Friday. And every Sunday was Easter. Kind of answers people give when they only know part of the answer. 1Novel01-Local Event c...

Friday, August 21, 2015. Fighting in Borrowed Armor (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). A confession: I almost did the same thing everyone else does with the "Armor of God.". That would be a mistake. All of that is to the good. We need to absorb the lessons of Ephesians 6. We do need to armor up for the fight. It is a real battle that rages all about us, every day, and we need to be in it! It's not our armor. Perhaps you see the problem. How are we to put on God's armor? Imagine a small child outfitt...

Sunday, April 26, 2015. The Court of Good Deeds (a Lectionary reflection by Steve Orr). Without preamble, the tall man fixed his eyes on Bob and asked in the voice of one who was accustomed to speaking only with the most cultured members of society, "What did you do and how do you plead? My brothers and I have other things to which we must attend.". Bob was starting to get it, or at least a glimmer of it. "Are you telling me there is a law against performing good deeds and that I have broken it? In respo...
