Helping You Find Right Antiques. Entries Tagged as 'Jewellery'. Mourning jewellery–poignant and highly collectable. November 16th, 2012 · No Comments. Queen Victoria ruled for almost 64 years, the longest in British history. The last 40 of them were spent in mourning for her beloved husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861. And when she declared that mourning nationally should be for the longest term in modern times , it became not just a ritual but a […]. Read more →]. Masriera – master jeweller. I am h...

Helping You Find Right Antiques. Entries Tagged as 'Ivory'. My heart belongs to Chiparus Dolly Sisters. November 23rd, 2012 · No Comments. THIS magnificent bronze and ivory figure by the great Romanian-born Art Deco sculptor Demetre Chiparus may not be unique numerous editions would have been cast but the two exotic vaudeville dancers it depicts surely were. They were the Dolly Sisters, the original dolly birds, alluringly naughty legends in their own lifetime on both […]. Read more →]. Read more →].

Helping You Find Right Antiques. Entries Tagged as 'Ephemera'. Menus and their holders can be tasty collectables. December 7th, 2012 · No Comments. I’m on a diet, so there’ll be no stuffing myself with turkey, Christmas pudding and brandy butter or lashings of ginger beer this festive season. Thankfully we’ll be on a beach, so the temptation won’t even be there, which is just as well because will power was never my strong point. It’s one of the […]. Read more →]. Helping You Find Right Antiques. Larr; The potted history of collectable Victorian pot lids. Mourning jewellery–poignant and highly collectable. What better way to spend rainy days than collecting first editions of Biggles’ adventures. Am grateful to Roger Harris to sell for his assistance in writing this post. Roger is the publisher of . Both of which I recommend highly. Recent auction the book retailed originally for 3/6d (17 pence) I thought there was no one better equipped to tell me more. For star...

Helping You Find Right Antiques. Larr; Silversmiths who kept greatness in the family. Trading up is on the cards. Antique snuff boxes, collection not to be sniffed at. Tzar Michael of Russia was not impressed with the fashion. In 1634, he issued a degree to the effect that anyone caught engaging in the habit of taking snuff would get a strict warning to desist. Anyone caught a second time would have his nose cut off! 8211; sneeze, cough, spit! The practice of inhaling powdered tobacco became common in Eu...

Wayne Colquhoun: Bronze Caryatid Pillasters 9ft High-Piece of the Week
http://waynecolquhoun.blogspot.com/2015/06/bronze-caryatid-pillasters-9ft-high.html
Thursday, 25 June 2015. Bronze Caryatid Pillasters 9ft High-Piece of the Week. These Caryatid are 9 feet High and pretty fantastic and would grace any Belgravia mansion. The feet are clawed and they may be a depiction of Minerva the goddess but I will have to do a bit more research on that. They are 9 feet high and in the right place would make more than a statement. I think they may be eastern European. Https:/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caryatid. Labels: Piece of the Week. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Wednesday, 27 August 2014. A businessman recently sat in my shop asking, well, in roundabout way, why money does not seem to motivate me, maybe in the way it does him. 8220;There seems more to life to me, than money” I said “Art is important to me and the monetary value can become clouded or even secondary sometimes”. 8220;Here is some of my artwork,” I said reaching over for some life drawings I had recently completed. I do these in about 10 minutes, I consider them a good staring point and sh...8220;It...

Wayne Colquhoun: December 2014
http://waynecolquhoun.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 16 December 2014. Ships At Anchor by Richard Parkes Bonington-One Of My Favourite Things. This is one of my most favourite pictures. Yes I know I love modernism and 20. Century art, but in a round about way this is the forerunner to those modernist pictures that we are all, now, so familiar with. To my eye this may be a 19. Century work but it is as fresh, and bright, as if it had been painted last year. Because most of being an artist is not just about being able to paint. A lot can be said aga...
Wayne Colquhoun: David Bomberg-Was He A Good Artist Or, Just There?

Tuesday, 9 June 2015. David Bomberg-Was He A Good Artist Or, Just There? I am not quite certain why I decided to find out more about the artist David Bomberg maybe I was just a bit intrigued by one of his paintings or his life which was different and eventful,. Or maybe I am annoyed that he shot his toe off and escaped the war where many died. The end of World War One, and a generation would try to overcome the scarring by trying to build a new world. He then had stepped into another world and Sargent he...
Wayne Colquhoun: Lusitania Medal.
http://waynecolquhoun.blogspot.com/2015/04/lusitania-medal.html
Tuesday, 28 April 2015. This Friday 1st May is the anniversary and a tragic date in Maritime history. It is 100 years after the Lusitania set sail for Liverpool. It would not reach its destination. On May 7th it would be torpedoed and sunk by a German Submarine. I offered this medal for a competition in the Liverpool Echo some time ago and it is no longer available but I do feel emotional every year when the date comes about and I start to think of the tragedy. It was said that 500 German medals were str...
Wayne Colquhoun: February 2015
http://waynecolquhoun.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Friday, 13 February 2015. Alexander Archipenko-Master of Modernism? Alexander Archipenko's work at first glance and to fresh eyes of the 21. Century seems cliched and old hat. This is because, like many artists such as Mondrian and numerous others that we thought of as modern, it has been copied over and over again by plagiarists. So why does his name stand the test of time and be linked with some of the greats? And where from where did his inspiration occur, was it original? Picasso collage of 1912 R...
Wayne Colquhoun: November 2014
http://waynecolquhoun.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 19 November 2014. Mintons Secessionist Art Nouveau Vase-Piece of the Week. Sometimes a design or a colour scheme on a piece of pottery just works. We have all had that feeling where you can't put your finger on it, but it reminds you of something. Whether it appeals to your subconscious mind, your primeval or just that they remind you of a flower you once held. Designers and decorators are usually picked for their ability to recognise these signals to the senses, before they pass them on to us.

Wayne Colquhoun: Rossetti painted maidens with eyes like pools.
http://waynecolquhoun.blogspot.com/2015/07/rossetti-painted-maidens-with-eyes-like.html
Thursday, 16 July 2015. Rossetti painted maidens with eyes like pools. He painted temptresses and beautiful damoselles, he painted beauties that he wanted to bed. He was inspired by drugs and alcohol and he was mortified by criticism like a schoolboy would be. He would let himself down badly by exhuming his wife corpse to retrieve a book of poetry that he had buried with her because he was so overcome with grief. And then he was not. To produce work, through a code of honour spelt out in their manifesto.
