The Writing Desk: Week Four
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2011/11/week-four.html
Friday, 25 November 2011. My posts are getting later each week. I blame NaNo and the moving chaos! This week I have good news and bad news. The good news is, I reached 50k in the weekend and finished my novel at 52k on Sunday! Today I should be able to let the illiterate NaNo robots count my words and get my winner's certificate. Since I was feeling a little deflated and there were still ten days of November left, I started writing something else. It's not going to be a novel, though. Just a litt...I hop...

The Writing Desk: January 2013
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, 10 January 2013. What I'm Doing When I'm Not Blogging. That is to say, all the time. At least judging by the date on my last entry. I just stared at that date for long minutes, feeling guilty. June! That's seven months ago. And combined with that title, about goofing off. Man, that looks bad. Like I did nothing but goof off for seven months straight! But obviously that's not the case. I swear. So let's review what I accomplished in the last seven months. You see lots of New Year's resolutions t...

The Writing Desk: June 2011
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Monday, 20 June 2011. Last week I wrote about how my new At-Least-One-Word-A-Day Rule has helped me keep writing despite plenty of distraction. I fight that - and my One-Word Rule has helped. But I have been writing very slowly because of it. What helps best against that kind of distraction is some discipline. But when I am dealing with all those distracting thoughts as well, it becomes even harder to fight the urge to check my email for the five hundred and twenty-third time. My netbook, for this very r...

The Writing Desk: June 2012

Tuesday, 5 June 2012. The Importance of Goofing Off. For several weeks now I have been revising and editing my book, and I haven't been doing much else. Such as blog. Ahem. I have definitely been making (slow) progress, ticking off one item on my (various) revision lists after the other. (I like working with lists. It gives me a sense of accomplishment to see the list get shorter as I progress.). And suddenly, there it was. An idea. Of course this doesn't mean that I am done with my edits. Lots of wo...

The Writing Desk: March 2011
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 8 March 2011. Lately, my brain has not been very cooperative with my desire to develop a new project. It's not writer's block per se, but more a frustrating difficulty with concentrating on pretty much anything. Focusing has become a struggle. I know at least in part what my problem is and how I am tripping myself up. What I don't always know is how to snap out of it. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Forward Motion for Writers. National Novel Writing Month. Vision: A Resource for Writers. Love at fir...

The Writing Desk: Book Recommendations
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2012/01/book-recommendations.html
Thursday, 19 January 2012. I don't usually do book reviews, here on the blog or elsewhere. The reason for this is mostly that my opinion of a book tends to seem so incredibly subjective and personal that it wouldn't be useful to anyone outside my head. For example, I read John Green. S new book The Fault in Our Stars. Revolution" by Jennifer Donnelly. Deeper Than Blue" by Jill Hucklesby. Sweethearts" by Sara Zarr. When Jenna's only childhood friend Cameron, who disappeared years ago, returns, she is conf...

The Writing Desk: October 2011
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, 29 October 2011. Yes, it's that time of year again. It's getting cold and foggy outside, the leaves are turning yellow, and I am desperately trying to figure out which of two-and-a-half story ideas to turn into a novel this November. This year's National Novel Writing Month. Will be particularly challenging for me, since I am going to move to a new apartment in December. I maybe have to do some of my noveling in between half-packed boxes. But then again, last year's NaNo. Quality vs. quanti...

Title, oh no! Jun 3rd, 2010 at 9:49 AM. BUT WHAT DO I CALL THEM? I keep falling back on Hammer and Sickle, which is an obvious non-starter. I want to focus on urban workers' tools, so the hammer still works. I get stuck on things like brushes (street sweepers) or needles. What about a loom? The Hammer and Loom Society? That's all kind of jumbled. Hammer Society by itself sounds like I'm writing a supers book. May 23rd, 2010 at 10:17 AM. To demons and dementia! NPR: Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. And in this ...

The Writing Desk: April 2011
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Monday, 18 April 2011. Here We Go Again. I used to think of complete rewrites as emergency measures for books that really sucked. Something people who write very messy first drafts do. Something you do when the book is terrible but there's a good idea in it. Sort of like a brain transplant. Now I'm thinking about my very own first complete rewrite, and things are starting to look different. There are other reasons, too. The genre is not quite right. Some of the subplots don't work as well as they...Polis...

The Writing Desk: Week Two
http://lenalothanas.blogspot.com/2011/11/week-two.html
Tuesday, 8 November 2011. I hope your novels are going well! Thanks to everyone who left a comment on my last post and a big sorry that I haven't been reciprocating! My first week of NaNo was a bit crazy, with lots of stuff to do and a family visit over the weekend. Also, I am a bad, bad blogger. And a worse social networker. There's magic, too. And pranks. So, keep writing everyone and don't get sick! Because it's not helpful. But you knew that. Labels: Birth of a Novel blog chain. LOL, this sounds like...
