How we do email at Makeshift
http://writing.makeshift.io/pieces/how-we-do-email-at-makeshift
How we do email at Makeshift. Our approach to the bit of the app no one wants to work on. For better or worse, email is really important. Across all aspects of a digital business. Done correctly it helps with acquisition (email marketing), activation (drip/on-boarding email), retention (behavioural email) and referral (invite your friends! I’d like to add that I’m not a programmer. And so this thinking is really a summary of the technical work done by @stef. And others at Makeshift. Just sayin’. So it’s ...
Step away from the screen
http://writing.makeshift.io/pieces/step-away-from-the-screen
Step away from the screen. When I’m working really intensely on a project there often comes a point where it becomes all-consuming. Inevitably after a little while I will wake up one weekend and notice that, oops, I’ve painted myself into a corner again! For a little while. I have a principle of leaving by example. The danger at that point, with all-consuming work, at least as far as I’ve noticed it in my own behaviour, is that you can start doing the wrong work, and making the wrong decisions by being t...

How to do good talks at conferences
http://writing.makeshift.io/pieces/how-to-do-good-talks-at-conferences
How to do good talks at conferences. Hint: Teach don't sell. Last Friday I went to Brooklyn Beta. I'd been looking forward to it a lot, as I know several people who'd been before, who have all eulogised about the conference's honesty, creativity and focus on supporting like minded internet-ty craftspeople to help each other get better at what they do. Preaching to the choir. This made me think. Write about the amazing talk I would like Joe to have given. Note down some points on what makes a great talk.
Things we learnt trying, and failing, to build an e-commerce platform for selling digital goods
http://writing.makeshift.io/pieces/things-we-learnt-trying-and-failing-to-build-an-e-commerce-platform-for-selling-digital-goods
Things we learnt trying, and failing, to build an e-commerce platform for selling digital goods. Short version - It’s extremely hard to do. A year ago we set up Makeshift. A company dedicated to ‘giving a leg up to the little guy.’ Over the past year we’ve invented and built 11 products which have met with varying success. Over the next few weeks I’m going to try and write about the some of major things we’ve learnt by telling the story of these products, starting with our first app - Bitsy. That let peo...

Dave Haynes - Making A Shift
http://www.davehaynes.co/making-a-shift
Aka what I'm doing next. Back in January I announced on this blog that after 5 amazing years I would be leaving SoundCloud. It took me a long time to write that post, but Im glad I did and should say a big thank you to everyone who gave me positive feedback about it. It was one of the hardest decisions Ive ever had to make, but a few months in it still feels like the right one. One of the biggest things holding me back in making the decision was the question of what should I do next? Just as I was joinin...
Stef Lewandowski | Playfully hacking on things that matter
https://stef.io/writing
I write reasonably often, mainly on Medium. You’ll sometimes find my writing on other sites, such as the Quartz, The Guardian, Lifehacker, The Next Web and Wework. Personal stories, observations about the nature of things, writing for a wide audience. We made our own writing and publishing engine at Makeshift as an experiment. A few pieces remain here. The things I learnt as we built Makeshift went here.

There’s a simple charm to making a pot of coffee in an ordinary coffee maker. Open the plastic lid. Scoop some unpretentious, pre-ground coffee into the basket. Fill the pot up with tap water and try not to make a huge mess when you pour it into the machine. Close the lid, press ON. Simple. The coffee maker makes it own little small talk with you while it does its work. Sip-sip-sip-sip-shhhhhgurgle. What magic is happening inside to pull the water up and through the coffee? Make your own App Store. A hum...
