Writing on the Wall

Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Short Stories. Why? Why do we write short stories? It seems like a crapshoot when the only ones who really read them are other writers. Right? Ask the average reader (who has no interest in writing) and they don't give a lick about the short story. They want novels. Something they can really sink their teeth into and will keep them engaged for hours, sometimes days. Yet, we writers continue to dabble away at the short stories. Why? I would urge any writer with the hopes of writin...

Writing on the Wall: May 2014

http://writingonthewall-vaneck.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 27, 2014. There Was Something In His Eyes. I am not prone to random acts of kindness. Not because I don't want to, but I just don't think about it at the time. Like on the rare occasion that someone ahead of me in the Timmy's line up buys my coffee. I don't think to pay it forward (or backward) to the person behind me. And then I kick myself later. I do hold doors for people most of the time but that's more of a proper etiquette type of thing. But here's what happened this afternoon. I carri...

Writing on the Wall: Ack! Worms...

http://writingonthewall-vaneck.blogspot.com/2011/05/ack-worms.html

Friday, May 27, 2011. I've been working on a story. As usual. But this one has taken on a life of its own and now I find myself having to research worms and worm farming. Who would have thunk it? I hate worms. As a small child going fishing with my dad on the weekend, I couldn't bear to touch those things. My dad had to always put the worm on the hook for me. I would not touch it. But I would not kill it either. Just leave it alone and let it do its thing. And now for the story. No squish on these shoes.

Writing on the Wall: December 2014

Monday, December 8, 2014. Ju-li-anne." She ticked off the syllables on her fingers. I smiled. I couldn't help it. Our daughter has come so far in the last few years. She's almost not the same child. Confident, enthusiastic, a desire to learn and please (most of the time). She reads a lot and well, and appears to enjoy it. We understand what she says at least 75% of the time. I booked an appointment for a speech assessment. Now she is in grade 1. And her speech has drastically improved. Her expres...Langu...

Writing on the Wall: 2 o'clock in the morning...

http://writingonthewall-vaneck.blogspot.com/2011/06/2-oclock-in-morning.html

Thursday, June 30, 2011. 2 o'clock in the morning. Something freaky happened the other day. Not the absurd or cool or coincidental kind of freaky, but the I-just-about-shit-my-pants kind of freaky. I know I watch too much serial killer, sociopathic or just plain psychotic kind of TV and I have no. Delusions that this did not lend itself to the situation on some level. Plus the fact that we were just warned by the police a few weeks ago to be on the lookout for a 5'3", blue hoody clad peeping Tom. So just...

I play games. Poorly. A scrubs view on our beloved hobby and culture. I am NO expert. Saturday, August 13, 2011. Confessions of an Altoholic. OMFG, what am. I going to play tonight? It's me. So very much me. I could tell you how many characters I play, but looking them up in order to remind myself will more than likely lead to yet another. At the time of this post I don't have many of them listed on the 'My Characters' section of the page. To all of them. A short side note here: both of the aforementione...

Eileen Hopkins, Author. As It Happens: My stories, My words. Let's create! Sunday, 20 March 2016. As a blogger, there are times when I write and delete and write and delete, thinking I have said it all! I am reminded of an exercise in a writing class a few years ago when the instructor introduced me to free-fall writing - writing whatever came into your mind. Granted this was a fiction class and writing about the crack on the wall was witty and deep at the same time! That's because once you have a star-q...

Wow, that whole fall just went by in a blur. I guess it's technically still fall, but we've had winter here in the town of cows for a good month now. All that yardwork I put off doing is now covered in snow, although a Chinook the last few days is turning it into ice. Ah, well. Next year. For hosting us, and to Long and McQuade. Phraseworthy Blog

Tuesday, January 5, 2010. I made these for my kid's teachers this last Christmas. I saw the idea on Sister's Stuff. This is really simple and easy gift and I heard all the teachers LOVED them! I used about 4 dozen new pencils to fill the jar, and the jar is a 1 quart size (I think). If you want to do these for end of the year gifts, let me know- the size of the vinyl is about 3x3 I believe and the cost is $5.00. I filled one jar with some treats for people other than teachers and they still look stunning!

Strength in Adversity

In hopes of Feeling, different. April 30, 2015, 06:45. The car rolls up and it ends the solace. Wheels crunching the pavement, made crumbly by the past winter. Dog’s ears go up and she always gets extra snuggly before the big break-away. Mom’s home. It wasn’t mom. I’m stunned by how strange things are at times. Like maybe I am not in this body, or this body is mine now but wasn’t before. How did I abuse it like that, how do I still? Today was like, you are what you eat. As in Kosher deli attracts the...
