The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Monday, March 31, 2014. The battle for better public education has two fronts: the work to change the system, and to help those kids who are stuck in it now. The effort to change the system seems to be taking place in Maine districts that are moving to what we call the proficiency-based. System. But we need to cast a very careful eye on what this change means for kids. Conversations among Maine teachers about the "science" of assessment!

The minds of kids: Is Traditional Education Harming our Kids?
http://mindsofkids.blogspot.com/2012/01/is-traditional-education-harming-our.html
The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Friday, January 20, 2012. Is Traditional Education Harming our Kids? Those who pay attention to the confused jumble that is the "education reform" movement often hear this cry: that the result of a failing school system is a lack of competitiveness of the U.S. compared with that of other nations. A slipping-away of the supremacy of our country. The reason we need to pack it in and start over: kids are being harmed. No, I don't believe it is.

The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. The "Grades" Wars: Swing.and a miss.strike two. I wrote this comment in response to an article in today's Lewiston Sun-Journal:. Both traditional grading and standards-based reporting miss the point by about a mile, when it comes to student learning. I know what I'm about to post will be counter to what many of us believe about what schools should do.but face it. Schools are failing. Are they creating cool stuff?

The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Thursday, January 23, 2014. PARENTS: Question School Testing! The questions below were passed to me by a Facebook friend. They provide a great place to start when trying to get to the bottom of your districts' testing. Test questions EVERY PARENT needs to ask:. From a veteran teacher). How many standardized tests does my child have to take this year? Where do these tests originate? What is the specific academic purpose for each one? Are you w...

The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Thursday, March 5, 2015. Parents have the right to opt their children out of high-stakes testing. The following are my remarks at today's press conference announcing the introduction of LD 695. That would make it easier for parents to keep their children from taking standardized tests in public schools). With the advent of standards that are enforced by testing, we’ve embraced a regime that runs counter not only to the way kids learn, b...

The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Monday, September 29, 2014. Ruby Payne and Deficit Thinking. First in a series. Ruby Payne’s seminal book, “A Framework for Understanding Poverty”, endeavors to provide educators with strategies for teaching children from poor families. Just as politicians are taught not to accept the premise of a question, we can't accept the premise of that snapshot. We have to examine it. Deficit thinking is a pseudoscience founded on racial and class bias...

The minds of kids. Molten Mama Lampwork Beads - my other life. Friday, November 7, 2014. Class Struggle in School. Public education’s reputation as a place where all kids are given an equal chance at success is a great myth. Those kids are our justification for continuing a coercive system of learning. But there is loss even for them. “Successful” students have turned their initiative, their powers of choice, over to the authorities. Over the course of 13 years, they have accepted tha...But there is some...
