Dorit decided on Oriental flavored menu which (at least in theory) presented some wine pairing problems. In practice both the wines I chose turned out perfect match to the dishes they accompanied. Wine and Food Adventures. 4/05 Bought in Beaune, Nov-97 for $44. Jadot's own domaine wine from the parcel they acquired in 1985 from the old Domaine Clair-Dau. Deep read looking sombre poised. Slight clearing around the rim. Some sediment. Very deep nose. Not entirely yielding. Complex aromas of black fruit surrounded by impressive 'Bourgogne Nose' with all the trimmings. Excellent. Long reverberating aftertaste a touch dominated by tannins. Wine and Food Adventures.

Wine and Food Adventures. 5/05 Bought in Sydney, Oct-03 for $25. I had this wine at a restaurant in Sydney a couple of years ago and liked it very much. So much so that I took the trouble to seek it out. A blend of 70% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Dark opaque purple-red. No clearing around the rim. Exploding aromas of red and black forest fruit fill your nose with every sniff. Spice, plums and some oak tones add to this wonderful and expressive nose. Wine and Food Adventures.

Wine and Food Adventures. 10/2004. Bought in England, Aug-01 for $97. The "generic" (i.e non single-vineyard) Barbaresco made by superstar Angelo Gaja from the wonderful 1997 vintage. Medium-deep ruby color. Very slight clearing around the rim. Fragrant lovely nose laden with red fruit aromas and soft wood notes. Very nice [if not bombastic] and promising nose. Medium long and reverberating aftertaste. Wine and Food Adventures.
1996 Abadia Retuerta, Pago Valdebellon

Wine and Food Adventures. 11/04 Bought in Spain, Jan-01 for $95. A couple of weeks ago we had the other flagship wine of Abadia Retuerta - Pago Negralada. While the Negralada was Tempranillo based, this Valdebellon is pure Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged in French barrique for more than 2 years before bottling. We had this with grilled duck accompanied by baked-then-fried potatoes. Yummy! Pretty dark purple red. No clearing around the rim. Noticeable sediment. Wine and Food Adventures.
