山号を雲澤山、寺号を龍厳寺と呼ぶ曹洞宗の寺院である。 創建は寛永年間（1624～1643）と伝えられ本尊は聖観世音菩薩坐像。 山形県鶴岡市にある善峰寺を本寺、永平寺を本山としている。 龍厳寺は一般に山の寺と呼ばれているが、その訳は江戸時代中期に羽後地方（現在の協和町周辺）には宮田又鉱山、荒川鉱山、坊澤鉱山などがあり、寺がそのやまの経営者の庇護を受けていたことや、角館の町からは鉱山寄りにあった事などから「山の寺」と呼ばれている。
