Yankee in Bhutan

Thursday, December 12, 2013. What I Will Miss, Part I: Morning. The View from the Stairs, October. When I arrived last January, the paddies were sand-colored and the mountains hidden in cold clouds. The colorful tarp tents of the Layap, the nomadic people from north of Punakha, gumdropped the landscape. Their small, sturdy horses grazed lazily on spent rice stalks. The river was slow and shallow, posing no threat. Po Chhu Valley, January. Rice drying in the paddy. Rice stalks stacked for winter fodder.

Yankee in Bhutan: March 2013

http://www.yankeeinbhutan.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 18, 2013. How I Live: One Teaching Day. The "bell," a ubiquitous dog, and a side of beef (! At 6:45 precisely, the pigeons begin to clatter and coo on the roof- their feathers and dirt come into my bedroom under the door; their smell and racket a constant irritation. At 7:30, I get dressed for work. I alternate between wearing my kira. And wearing slacks, both for comfort and, because of the water shortage, I can't wash clothes very often so I have to be judicious about what I wear and when.

Thursday, July 25, 2013. What I Did On My Summer Vacation, Part I: Chamkar and Tang, Bumthang. The Tang Valley in central Bumthang. Rounds of Bumthang gouda. How grateful were we Bhutan Canada Foundation teachers, after two weeks of invigilating (proctoring) and scoring exams, to be whisked away for a three day retreat in Chamkar, Bumthang? And comfortable beds. A delicious beginning to three days of sight-seeing and reflection on our Bhutan experience. Heather Robertson crossing the bridge to the lake.

Thursday, September 12, 2013. All One Hundred and Twentynine of My Students (except one, who has a boil on her arse). My Class: 11 Arts B. Below are just a few photos of me with my lovely students. Arm wrestling with Sonam from 11 Commerce B. My 11 Arts B Captains: Ngawang Choden and Jigme Paldon Shangson Rai. A 'captain' is a class leader, appointed by the 'class teacher'- sort. Of a glorified homeroom teacher. 11 Arts B is my class.). Chhimi Selden, 11 Arts B, and I. The Boys of 12 Arts B.

Tuesday, August 6, 2013. What I Did On My Summer Vacation: MERAK. Merak, as seen from Gangu. The paths between the houses are narrow and rocky- and muddy in the summer. Livestock- the pack horses that travel to Tashigang for supplies and the yaks and dzhos that provide milk for cheese and butter and hair for clothes- wander the paths and graze lazily wherever they can find forage. Going to school in Merak. There is only a primary school- once kids complete. A pack-yak outside a Merak home. As every stude...

Bos Grunniens: Adventures In The Land of The Yak. Stories, photos and whimsy from a year of volunteering in Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon. Wednesday, 24 September 2014. I could curl up and sleep here in this road. Midnight on a Saturday night, climbing back up from the school to our new house, thick fog swirls around the gravel lines that edge the road, moonlight mushrooming in the silvery cloud. I could curl up and sleep here in this road, surrounded by the comfort of dust and cloud and nature.

Bos Grunniens: Adventures In The Land of The Yak. Stories, photos and whimsy from a year of volunteering in Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon. Saturday, 11 January 2014. A Homestay in Haa for Lomba (Haap New Year). Despite its close proximity to Paro and Thimphu, the Haa Valley is one of the least visited valleys by tourists coming to Bhutan which seems odd to me, given its fabulous name, beautifully forested hills and quiet, unspoiled nature. The beautiful Haa valley in summer. Day of the 10. As Ugyen ...

Bos Grunniens: Adventures In The Land of The Yak. Stories, photos and whimsy from a year of volunteering in Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon. Wednesday, 2 July 2014. Baby in a Frontpack in Bhutan. Lily does a few blockies (koras) around the Memorial Chorten, Thimphu. Similarly, the unlikely prospect of encountering a bear during a walk in the forests around Chamgang used to lead me to a sudden feeling of excitement, a few shouts of ‘Yo! Come back, sir! Is probably one of the areas most transited by tourists, it’s not a place that locals tend to frequent and you don’t want to fall victim to bars that offer frozen paella. Were putting on called Kings of Concrete. Hip-hop music,...
