Pausing Office Hours
http://rmurphey.com/blog/2015/08/04/pausing-office-hours
4 Aug 2015 edit. I started doing office hours. At the beginning of the year; its been tremendous fun, super eye-opening, and just generally quite rewarding. I wont lie: its also been a lot of time, especially the first few weeks when I terribly underestimated how many people would sign up. Women The ratio isnt quite 50-50, but its closer than any team Ive worked on before. Its also the first lead role Ive had where my responsibilities span beyond the front end, a prospect both exciting and daunting.

One thing that node-tap provided that tape did not provide out of the box was the ability to measure the code coverage of unit tests. Karma. FileOvervi...

Refactoring setInterval-based polling
http://rmurphey.com/blog/2013/02/04/refactoring-setInterval-polling
4 Feb 2013 edit. I came across some code that looked something like this the other day, give or take a few details. AppHelpers.checkSyncStatus = function() { if (App.get(syncCheck) { return; } var check = function() { $.ajax(/sync status, { dataType: json, success: function(resp) { if (resp.status = = done) { App.Helpers.reloadUser(function() { clearInterval(App.get(syncCheck) ; App.set(syncCheck, null); }); } } }); }; App.set(syncCheck, setInterval(check, 1000) ; };. You might have heard that. AppHelper...

1 Jan 2014 edit. I pitched my tent. I followed them to the free dinner being served for them across the street. I rode 150 miles - unencumbered by camping gear and all the rest - in the fund-raising ride for the next two days. I made new friends. They invited me to come stay with them for a few days in Chapel Hill. I lived with them for a month. I borrowed their 1990 Ford Festiva for a year. I got good at JavaScript. I traveled the world talking about it.

Writing Conference Proposals
http://rmurphey.com/blog/2015/01/26/writing-conference-proposals
26 Jan 2015 edit. Ive had several office hours. Sessions in the last couple of weeks, and one topic that comes up again and again is how to write a talk description. If you think about it, conference organizers dont have a whole lot to go on when theyre choosing talks, unless they already know who you are. Even if your name is well-known, though, organizers may still not know who you are - lots of conferences are taking a blind approach. Paragraph 1: The context. Youve got the hang of this whole JavaScri...
