Joan is the second of five children born of James Joseph Washington, Sr. and Mildred S. Washington. Wayne Brooks, Sr. is the seventh of eight children born to James and Hattie Brooks. Joan met Wayne in 1972. They were joined in marriage on March 21, 1975 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. They have four (4) children - Monte Gibbs, Annette. A/k/a Wayne Brooks Jr.). James J. Washington, Jr. was born into the family on February 18, 1963. He is our only son and brother, and we love him very much. He was baptized at Mt. Morris Baptist Church in May 1977 and he joined the Junior Usher Board and the Young Adult Choir soon thereafter. He was graduated from Fauquier High School and attended Northern Virginia Community College, where he studied Autobody Mechanics. He has always been good with his hands and has loved to take things apart (just ask Mom about the radio!

Mildred S. Washington married James J. Washington, Sr. on January 2, 1947 in Markham, Virginia at the home of her mother and father, Virginia Summers and Lewis Summers, Sr. Their loving union produced five children: Barbara, Joan, Brenda, Millie (a/k/a Jo), and James (a/k/a Jimmy or James J. Washington, Jr.). Mom still sings in a group called The Sisters of the Cross. She also is a Deaconess at Guildfield Baptist Church and continues to teach Sunday School there.
