The Smokey as a building, as far as we know, dates back to around the 17th century. The original building is the ‘Deep End’ area of the bar area. Photographs, which are displayed in our restaurant, clearly show that the Smokey was originally two thatched cottages. There are some pictures and records that indicate that the original name of the pub was either THE SHIP INN or THE SHIP INN OLDE SMOKEY HOUSE.
