Thanksgiving – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/11/29/thanksgiving
November 29, 2016. On Thanksgiving day, I sat down at my table, not for the plentiful meal but to edit images and video from Haiti. I spent several hours editing video, and more hours going through tons of images. In terms of plentiful – I had way more than I can handle. I had to stop at a point and call my mother crying. I don’t cry often, but this assignment has rattled me. There is such a dichotomy, not just between the have and have nots. But within each person I met there. Don’t get me wrong, ...

Watching for news from Onaville during the storm – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/10/05/watching-for-news-from-onaville-during-the-storm
Watching for news from Onaville during the storm. October 5, 2016. It was only a week, but very emotionally charged. The people, the area and their lives all changed my perception forever. I was hugged and touched by kids whose only language with me was in a show of affection. I talked with several adults about their lives, their dreams and just every day chatting. I got to know them and care for them. We got word that everyone is safe in the communities we visited. And for that I’m grateful. You are com...

In lieu of showers – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/09/19/in-lieu-of-showers
In lieu of showers. September 19, 2016. For the last week I have been without hot water. The water heater broke and I had to wait for the part. Luckily it’s still hot out so cold showers are not a problem. It reminded me of my week in Haiti. The campus were we stayed didn’t have hot water either. Going in, I thought it would be miserable. I usually like super hot showers. At dinner, spicy food and hot temperatures made for a very sweaty experience. So, it was time to hit the showers. Of course, it also b...

Editing – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/08/30/editing
August 30, 2016. August 30, 2016. Today was an editing day. I sat down in front of my computer and dove in. My grand plan was to come up with the first edit of my photo story on daily life I saw in Haiti. Several hours later I had moved, shuffled and rearranged the images a million times with nothing to show for it. There are too many little story lines to keep them organized on a screen. My eyes were burning and I was feeling overwhelmed. So, I went old-school. Wish me luck…. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Rain – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/08/31/rain
August 31, 2016. The ground is dry, so dry it’s cracked and dusty. Water is too valuable to spare for gardens. I visited with residents that filled their land with orange trees, flowers and herbs. It was beautiful. A small paradise away from the harshness of the street where the sun reflects back on the white gravel and there is no shade in sight. They waited for the rain to water their garden. But, rain is both a blessing and a curse. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Homes in Onaville – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/09/02/homes-in-onaville
September 2, 2016. The homes in Onaville range from shacks to concrete structures. The shacks are made out of cardboard, tin and anything else available. Many of concrete homes are in progress, not just the rebarb sticking out but half-made walls and no roofs. People build as they acquire materials, sometimes abandoning the project altogether. Most homes are of the hodge podge variety. I was surprised when I walked into their yard. I thought the path was cement. They had a couple of benches and a burner ...

A different kind of shutterbug in Onaville – Haiti
https://yossifor.wordpress.com/2016/09/12/a-different-kind-of-shutterbug-in-onaville
A different kind of shutterbug in Onaville. September 12, 2016. They don’t have electricity, running water or proper shelter. They are impoverished beyond anything we can imagine. Yet, even the youngest child in Onaville knows how to scroll through images on the back of my digital camera. They totally amazed me. Here the kids usually lose interest pretty quickly. Is it that they are so used to cameras? Or is it a short attention span? Are Americans kids more hyperactive? I came back with a collection of ...
