The Year in Sand 2007. The next day seemed better. Until I got to the beach. Well, maybe it's calmer than yesterday. The sea didn't seem quite so wind-excited. Still, there was a layer of flying sand over the beach, and my borrow pit filled with blown-in sand as I built a sculpture atop the stump of the previous effort. Build number: 07F-9 (lifetime start #319). Title: "Wind Made Visible". Location: Venice Breakwater, on the flat. Start: approx 1215; construction time wind-limited to about 3.5 hours.

The Year in Sand 2007. Fog, Wind, Spray: 07F-6. Spring is interesting. Inland it might be 80 degrees while we shiver on the beach. Better cool than hot for sand sculpture. I got lucky on this one. The fine sand came back, in a thick bed beneath a few inches of coarse overburden. All I had to do was remove that. Much better than the backbreaking work of "cream-skimming.". 1765 by Larry @. The Year in Sand: 2003. This is another offshoot of the multiple experiment. I free-piled all the sand for this rather than using forms, and this enabled better base integration. The time pressure was even greater because these, being below the tide line, get wiped out early. They're smaller so quicker to make, but as the year progressed I got into more detail. 03M-2 and M-3 were precursor experiments done in late January. The Year in Sand 2009. Friday, December 25, 2009. My friend Jane came down to visit. We'd intended to go to Venice and make a sculpture but events sort of derailed the schedule. To make things simpler we just went out to Ocean Park and took potluck on the sand. It wasn't very good, so the sculpture was smaller than I'd wanted.
