아주 많은 사람들이 지나쳐갔다. 매일 다른 사람들을 새로 만나고 서로에게 서로를 잠깐 떨구어 주었다. 또 많은 사람들이 잊혀졌다. 더이상 만날 일이 없이 그저 빠르고 감각적으로 지나쳐간다. 그 순간에는 최선을 다한다 해도 말이다. 그 와중에 때때로 더 알고싶어지는 사람들을 만나기도 한다. 하지만 그간 나는 대부분의 시간을 새로운 사람들을 만나고 또 그들을 금방 잊어버리거나 아쉬워하는데에 보낸 것 같다. 영국에서의 타지인으로서의 생활이 거의 끝나가려는 어느 날, 이런 생각이 났다. 내가 여기서 원하는 것이 뭐지? 그리고 어느날 나는 또 한번 돌아서려 했는데, 이런 생각들이 날벼락처럼 쏟아졌다. 나는 과연 한번이라도 내가 원하는 것을 나를 버려가며 그것에 던져본 적이 있나? 불균형에 대하여 | Note and Sketchbook

자로 잰 듯이 바른 균형감을 가진 그림을 그리기 위한 여러가지 공식들이 있다. 삼각 구도, 명암을 넣는 법, 원근법, 황금 비율.또 전 세계 각지에서 나타나는 만다라형. 이런 것들은 그려지는 사물의 형상을 그 자리에 필연적으로 고정시킨다. 그 고정된 안정감으로 인해 그런 그림은 적어도 안전하고 기본은 가게 된다. 나는 어느날 Saul Leiter 의 사진들을 보고 이것을 본격적으로 깨봐야겠다고 생각했다. 전시에서 본 사진들은 스타일리시하고 (그 당시로서) 트렌디하면서도 허를 찌르는 데가 있었다. 그는 그냥 매일 사진기를 들고 거리를 찍었다는 인터뷰를 했다. 그런데 그가 아무 사진이나 고른 건 아니었던 것 같다. 내용 면에 있어서는 우발적이고 즉흥적이면서도 그가 고른 어떠한 불안함과 어긋난 것, 겹쳐진 것, 멋대로 잘려버린 중요한 주제등은 치밀한 의도의 결과로 보였다. 생존용 영어.특히 말이 짤리지 않게 하기 위해 쉬지 않고 떠벌거리는게 늘었다. 말이 빨라졌다고 한다. 할 수 있는 괴 요리의 종류가 늘다. 자전거로 도로와 산타기는 기본. 계속 연락할 수 있는 소수의 친구. 엘레나. 다니엘. 케이시. 또 하우스메이트들. 나와 내 국가가 어느 정도의 위치에 놓여있는지에 대해 객관적인 인식. 킹스턴 석사과정에서 배운 것 : 실수를 두려워 하지 않는 것.흥미가 생기면 일단 무작정 해보는 것.결과에 대해 미리 예상하지 않기. 불가지론자로의 잠정적 변화. 그리고 그 선언. 앞으로 계속 찾아갈 주제. 미학, 미술사 공부. 우연한 기회로 알게 된 전하현 선생님께서 이 게으른 학생을 친히 살피셔서 대영박물관, 내셔널 갤러리, 애슈몰린, V&A, 코털드 갤러리 등으로 끌고 다니시며 작품을 분별할 수 있는 눈을 뜨게 해주심. 이제부턴 구체성 위에서 진짜 공부를 더 해야 한다는 생각. 감정의 노예가 되지 않는 법. 하지만 여전히 흔들린다. 한국이 서구화 되면서 받아들인 자본주의, 신자유주의 등이 서양과는 전혀 다른 이국적인 나라인 한국에 와서 부작용 없이 온전히 뿌리내리기란 불가능한 일이 당연한 걸거다. 심지어 그것들의 본산지인 서양조차도 계급문제와 밸런스 등을 갖고 곯머리 앓고 있는데.왜 인정하지 않는 걸까? 무슨 체면유지가 그렇게 중요한가? 우리 사회에는 아무 문제도 없어야 하는 것처럼 그렇게 포장하는데 급급하다우린 그것들이 이런 추한 면모를 드러낼 수도 있고 이렇게 급진적으로 발전해온 곳에서는 더더욱 검열 없이 헤게모니를 받아들일 수 있게 된다고 배운적이 없다…사회 전체가 병들었는데 지금 한 회사, 한 사람 이것만 탓한다고 무슨 소용일까. 개인 페북에 올렸던 글 옮김).
