astropixie: aurora australis
http://amandabauer.blogspot.com/2015/03/aurora-australis.html
Things and stuff astronomy and life. Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Last night the skies over a lot of australia and new zealand glowed - the aurora australis. this photo was captured in perth, western australia by colin legg. You can also see the milky way shooting across the sky and the large magellanic cloud - a small irregular galaxy smudged just at the top of the red glowing gas. The southern hemisphere night sky is so lovely. That is an amazing shot! 3/19/15, 1:41 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Things and stuff astronomy and life. Wednesday, April 8, 2015. How to present science to anyone. This article is originally published. In early April 2015. Giving a presentation is your opportunity to share your passion about a topic with an audience and empower them to wonder "why? About the same questions that fascinate you. When the audience walks away with a deeper understanding of something you’ve convinced them is important, they will remember you and what you gave to them. 1 Isolate the BIG IDEA.

Things and stuff astronomy and life. Friday, February 20, 2015. Observing Galaxies with SAMI. I've been out at Siding Spring Observatory for the last week observing galaxies for the SAMI survey with the 4-metre Angle-Australian Telescope (AAT). Here's the story. Arrive at siding spring observatory and hope to see crisp blue skies above the telescope dome. Check the instrument hardware. Hope that you get to go for a ride with SAMI at prime focus (spot the astronomer! From a different place across the face...

An unexpected part of my position as "outreach officer" has been inheriting the role of "press officer" for the Australian Astronomical Observatory. AAO) this isnt something i want to spend too much time on, but i do enjoy the occasional challenge of turning technical science results into fun stories accessible to media sources and a more general audience. So here you go - new science! Galaxies grow by churni...

astropixie: what kills a galaxy?
http://amandabauer.blogspot.com/2015/04/what-kills-galaxy.html
Things and stuff astronomy and life. Friday, April 17, 2015. What kills a galaxy? Or maybe a more appropriate title is "how do you know when a galaxy is officially old? Anyway, I wrote an article for the conversation. With astronomers Tanya Hill and Sarah Brough describing some new research on how galaxies stop forming stars. Giant galaxies die from the inside when they stop making stars. Galaxy clusters are impressive but do they hinder star formation? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Top 5 Under 40".

Things and stuff astronomy and life. Friday, March 27, 2009. The extended history of astropixie. I've been asked a lot lately how i got interested in astronomy, what motivated me to study physics, and what brought about astropixie. So i thought i'd share the stories. My official science career began when i was eighteen and decided to change my undergraduate major to physics. Only to discover i was the sole female among the physics majors! There were always little tricks involved in the solutions and once...
