Saturday, 18 January 2014. Very much a New Year. By Colin MY COMPUTER TUTOR. It's been a long time since I blogged - August 22nd 2013 to be precise - and yes, it's very remiss of me to leave you, my keen followers, wondering what the heck has happened. So I do apologise for my lack of communication. Here follows all the news, great and small. What she'd actually got herself looked like an iPad, but it turned out to be the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Actually, I can't. The Big Big News. I've run the My Computer T...

Wednesday, 13 March 2013. By Colin MY COMPUTER TUTOR. I've made a few donations to Concern Universal. Because they are a locally-based charity here in Hereford and so their chuggers are often out in High Town. I'm made their name look like a link, but I'm not going to make it active. I make no apologies for referring to their agents as "chuggers" - charity muggers. Why did you do that? She said. "Why did you look like that? I was trying to avoid you", I said, opening a teasing gambit. You could try stand...

Tuesday, 7 May 2013. Windows 8 reviled, revisited and revised. By Colin MY COMPUTER TUTOR. This merry May morning found me sauntering into town to bank a cheque after my Bank Holiday labours. The gentleman round the corner who couldn't open a video attachment last week had phoned to say that he now had received a document attached that he couldn't open. So, despite it being Bank Holiday Monday, I went round and installed OpenOffice.org. He's a long-standing client. I'm a bit of a softy anyway. I'm coming...

Thursday, 22 August 2013. By Colin MY COMPUTER TUTOR. It's fun to experiment with a computer when you have one to spare - when it's not. The one you use as your main store of valuable data! And I wanted to give those a try. Then I needed an email client, so I thought I'd play around with Mozilla Thunderbird. To cut a very long story short, I spent most of a day downloading and installing, yawning at progress bars, clicking on x. A lot and watching out for those little check boxes! I advise my clients, as...

Tuesday, 11 February 2014. By Colin MY COMPUTER TUTOR. As I've probably mentioned before, I've always had a fascination with birds, so I can stand in the cold, and even some wet, to watch them for half an hour or more. There is some risk in having them pass over your head, and I have a few splashes on my coat to testify to that! But I wear them proudly. I can point to one and say "Have you seen the starlings? Best show at the theatre! Breaks the ice at parties. But, of course, the book has to be found.

Sunday, 17 February 2013. There's one for you, nineteen for me.". So George Harrison wrote, before I was old enough to worry about Income Tax. Go onhave a listen. Actually, it was a long time before I did have to worry about Income Tax, because until 2008 I'd always worked for some employer or other and had all my tax deducted at source. So having to keep accounts and set it all out every January for these last four years still seems a bit strange. Links to this post. Labels: Hereford Cathedral Choir.

Saturday, 29 June 2013. The continuing case for a mail client! By Colin MY COMPUTER TUTOR. I visited a new customer this week, who wanted help with her new laptop. In previous posts on this blog I've made it pretty clear what I think about Windows 8, but I'm not going to blame that operating system for the problem my customer and I encountered. Although, as you will see, I can blame Microsoft in general! It's so satisfying to apportion blame in the right quarters, isn't it? At the time, I didn't know wha...
