Paper Boats

Friday, July 09, 2010. These two books don't actually have much in common. I just read them around the same time and had sharply differing reactions to them. Although I had somewhat mixed feelings about the previous Geraldine Brooks novel I'd read, People of the Book. I was excited to read March. I have vivid memories of being in second grade, sitting on the swing during recess and reading Little Women. Abolitionists were well meaning but still blinded by white privilege and even racism- surely you jest!

Paper Boats: August 2009

http://yourpaperboats.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 31, 2009. But unfortunately, as is usually the case with the whole misery-loves-company thing, that hasn't made my own problem (or my desire to whine about it) go away. I thought I'd write then, about the last novel I completely enjoyed. There's nothing particularly original about what John Williams does in Augustus. In his author's note Williams wrote,"if there are truths in this work, they are the truths of fiction. Rather than of history." Augustus. There's something restorative about a...

Monday, September 28, 2009. If you missed the first episode of the new Ken Burns documentary The National Parks. Or, like me, don't have a working tv- you can watch it online here. Edited to add: Well I certainly hope this improves in later sections because an hour in I am utterly unimpressed. Disappointing. Going-to-the-Sun Road, Glacier Nat'l Park. Grinnell Glacier Trail, Glacier Nat'l Park. Saturday, September 26, 2009. Began posting their "Best of the Millenium". To a greater extent than at other dan...

Paper Boats: March 2010

http://yourpaperboats.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 02, 2010. Turning the Lights Out. There's an interesting conversation going on over at WNYC's Performance Club sight about an incident that took place at P.S. 1 on Saturday when a performance artist was censored by the art gallery, which chose to turn the lights out during her performance. ( Part I. Not being familiar with either the artists in question or, really, performance art in general, I don't have anything insightful to add. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Good things in life.

Paper Boats: Swan Lake

http://yourpaperboats.blogspot.com/2007/06/swan-lake.html

Thursday, June 28, 2007. My computer has been on a visit to the Apple spa getting its parts replaced, but it's back now (hurrah! So I'm back to posting. So, for a couple years now I have been going around telling people that the only version of Swan Lake. I had seen was the Matthew Arnold one. And then Wendy would sigh, and nicely say, "Bourne, Meghan, Matthew Bourne. Why I constantly get the choreographer of the gay Swan Lake. Confused with the British poet who wrote Dover Beach. And it certainly seems ...

We Are Doing Excellent Learning →. November 17, 2011 · 9:58 pm. Things Are Gonna Start Changing Around Here. Last weekend saw our last substantial harvest of the 2011 garden (there’s still some boc choy growing all happily and greenly, and there was a bit of a catnip haul this morning) — the carrots. That’s six pounds, five ounces of carrots. Not too shabby, considering we almost didn’t get around to planting them! It was another good year for Maple Hoo, but you know what? We have short attention spans.

We Are Doing Excellent Learning. An Open Letter To Crafters On The Internet Who Have Recently Discovered Cross-Stitching Is Fun →. January 9, 2012 · 8:03 pm. When I first got the canning bug way back in September I would spend many productive hours at work staring at pictures of other people’s canned goods on Flickr. (Yes, I’m just that cool.) One of the first recipes I stumbled across that I simply had. To make, then, was this one for Minneola Old Fashioned Marmalade. I had three types to choose from, a...

When we first went through the box of 30 CDs after they showed up in the mail, this was the one I was most intrigued by, based on the little blurb on the label. It said:. However, when most people on the internet embraced knitting, crochet, and quilting, there’s been a lot of love for using high quality or designer materials. To kick off another year of awesome music, we picked up a grab bag of 30 CDs from Hydra Head Records. We’re going to snag one at random each weekend, give it a spin, and then keep track of it here, along with notes about whatever else is tickling our musical fancy that week. It’s a sort of Project365 for Your Earholes! Hands up, indeed.

Schnookie’s review: That 14-minute CD was 12 minutes too long. Pookie’s review: It sounds like if Zu met Dethklok and then played the same song over and over. In short, this was our first outright dud of the project. But the packaging was pretty funny, so there’s that. Project Hydra Head For Your Earholes: Week 3.
